A hunter was killed in N. Ark. yesterday evening by a buck he shot that wasn't dead. Impaled multiple times. What a way to go.

Did y’all hear about the teenager in Georgia shot and killed by his friend thinking he was a deer? He shot through the bushes with a rifle during bow season. I wonder if any charges came about

Saw another report of a hunter in Louisiana who was killed recently in a freak accident. First reports were that he had fallen from a ladder stand but now it appears he tripped on a stump and fell heat first into it. As I've gotten older, hunting from a ground blind has become most attractive. Link

Man that could have been real bad. Shoot that deer one more time for good measure.

Man that could have been real bad. Shoot that deer one more time for good measure. I think a lot of deer hunters are less inclined to shoot a deer a second time. While this is probably a lot more common practice with hog hunters, it seems to be more frowned upon by the deer hunting community. I would guess because you don't want to ruin additional meat or potentially ruin a nice, mountable rack? Don't want to admit they didn't make a proper shot?

Not saying these other hunters did not do this, but after shooting a deer, I sit for a bit before I go and start tracking. Usually I will try to wait 1/2 hour before leaving the blind just to assure the animal has time to bleed out. Not sure it is foolproof, just my practice.

It is a good idea to approach the animal slowly as well. Also from the rear of the animal and from it's back side (if possible). Try to see IF the animal shows any signs of breathing. Look also (if possible) to see if the deer's eyes are open or closed. Typically (but not always), deer die with eyes open and their tongues hanging out. If you come upon a deer with its eyes closed...chances are excellent it is still alive (even if not mobile). Shoot again.

If I had time I could share several stories of individuals who stuck their hand and arm into a hog trap without checking the eyes of hog that was just shot with a handgun.

That sounds like an awful situation. If the deer doesn’t drop in sight, always approach from the rear and even if no sign of life I’ll find a rock or stick to throw at it.

Similar thing happened to me in '92. Two bucks appeared in the hay patch, I shoot one, they both run. I wait long enough for a cup of coffee and a smoke and go after them. They crossed the CR onto the neighbor's place so I prop my rifle on the fence and go into the trees looking. I see the buck hung up in the brace wire at the corner of the fence, just lying there dead. I have.another smoke while I watch him. He's gone. I see I need to cut his hind hoof off to get him out of the fence, so I open my massive Buck 110 and ease up on him. As I'm cutting his hoof off the dang deer wakes up and commences to kicking and beating me to a bloody pulp! I get his head controlled and my little Buck 110 hacking away at his neck. I finally get inside and sever his windpipe, or something, I really don't know what all I cut, and hold him down while he dies.
I was beat to hell and bleeding like a stuck pig and it was way dark by then. If he'd been a spike he woulda' killed me. I cut his foot off to get him out of the fence and dragged him across the road. I go get my truck and toss him in the back and haul him to camp. We fire the lights up and start undressing him and realize there isn't a bullet hole anywhere in him. I'd knifed the wrong buck. He was just caught it a fence. We got that one tagged and on ice and went back and about 20 yards further into the trees found the buck I'd actually shot.
Edited to add: I just remembered the worst part! The whole time he and I were wrestling his free hind foot was steadily tattooing the back of my head!
