Pretty well decided on picking up a Bergara HMR B1 in 6.5 creed or a Tikka T3x CTR, this will probably be used for stand hunting and jack around long range target shooting, with probably more emphasis on hunting. Pretty well decided means the wife has reluctantly authorized the expenditure and I am going to strike while the iron is at least warm.

Need an optic rec in the sub $1k range, would like to have 20x magnification, but could probably live with a little less

I like the vortex pst gen II, the Nikon P1000, and surprisingly the Bushnell Forge and Nitro both look good to me. Burris Veracity was another that looked interesting. With the higher end FFP version of the Nitro being the most interesting due to the capped turrets.

I would like to have the glass to shoot out to 800/1000, if I should ever get time to do so.

Opinions?

In your budget and meeting your criteria the SS 5-20 is top of the field. That’s just one mans opinion but there it is.

SWFA SS 5-20 will have the best glass and build quality under $1k. The reticle is dated and it doesn't have a zero stop, but if you want optics and reliability, it's your best bet.

Gen 2 PST is probably the most full-featured scope in the price range, but you definitely sacrifice a little optically and a little with durability as well.

Not seeing it on their website, I see an SS 5-20 HD but not an SS 5 x 20, are they the same thing?

Burris Veracity 4-20x50.
What I had on my CTR and it’s made specifically for what you describe. Hunting first with long range shooting capability!

Yes, same thing

I had one on my CTR 6.5 CM for a long time. Really, really nice scope for the money.

Used Bushnell DMRii 3.5-21x50s are floating around out there under $800. Be sure you get the 10mil version.

Add me as another vote for the SS 5-20X HD. I've been using one continuously for 7 years. It looks quite beat up, still works perfect, and has never been sent in.

That is a lot of concurrence on the SWFA...guess I need to figure out how to go look through one. Picked up the rifle today though, Bergara HMR B14

They're located in Midlothian/Waxahachie area. You can go see one in store there. There's a good chance that some THF member has one nearby you if you're not in that general area.

I took a shot at the New Meopta 6, 4.5-27X50, with their new ill ret. Scope will be here next month. I've had one Meopta and loved it. Focuses to 25 yards if needed

priced right, we'll see

Where in the world are you? You can come out and look through mine, if you're close enough.

I have a SS 5-20. Happy with it.

My brother put a Nikon Black FX 1000 on a rifle a couple years ago. I like that scope a lot. No complaints with it yet. I don't ever read much about them, not sure if people just haven't tried them or what, maybe im looking in the wrong places. I would consider it worth looking at at least. I do like the reticle in it better than my SS and it is cost effective.

I have a 3.5-15x50 NXS that would be at the top of your budget, its MOA with HS turrets....
