How are we looking out there? We are running behind, just threw our feeders out a couple of weeks ago. How did the dry summer effect the deer out there? I would imagine the advantage would be with the hunter this year. Last year I was skunked, only saw doe, and young bucks. My dad took a doe. We dont have trail cams up so I will be flying blind. What are yall seeing?

A good start to your season would be your land not being affected by Anthrax this year.

Not Val Verde, but in Mills county this weekend it was dry, dry, dry. I saw several fawns and would suggest that they've been 'stunted' by the hard summer. Unless we have a very wet winter there will be lots of spikes/stunted yearlings next year and older bucks may suffer as well if they can't recover from the impending rut. However, many of our does have twins so numbers are still high.

Seriously, Val Verde county is ground zero in the Anthrax. We were 25 mi south of Sonora, and probably 85% of the deer herd is dead.

I just checked with the states website, no reported cases in Val Verde. Where are these reports coming from? This is not good if true.

Talk to the locals. Those reports are probably broad and not accurate.
Thursday at 12:45 PM #33 Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

This is not good if true. 750,00 square miles affected in that area with a mortality rate of 90% in some areas. Many properties like ours has changed from seeing 100-150 deer during a weekend fill trip to seeing 2-3 driving thousands of acres. Protein hasn't been touched and corn piling up under feeders that are inside feeder pens

Your odds of missing the outbreak are far better on the West side of Val Verde.
The entire East half of Val Verde from the North edge to South has been somewhat affected is my understanding

We are also in Val Verde and i think we were right on the boarder of where the outbreak stopped. We are about 17 miles south of the 55 intersection. In our northern pastures we have seen a slight decrease in numbers but other pastures seem to be doing fine. We have seen a lot of activity from the cameras and have been supplementing cottonseed with corn since around July.

We're in the North East corner of Val Verde and Langtry is clear and free I'd guess. My BIL hunts North of Langtry and has never had anthrax

Jesus! So what I'm hearing is just be happy if I see something this year, because it could be worse.
