I considered the 12 gauge but with OO buckshot. 55 yards is really pushing the extreme outer limits though. Never been much of a fan of slugs unless they are from a rifled barrel (which I do not own).

I think you have the right rifle for the job-- if I was in the same situation I'm going with my slug gun since I don't have a large bore lever.

.222 rem 50 gr. pill to head or just behind in the neck. Most weapons chambered in this caliber are capable of shooting 3 shots that can be covered by a quarter. Or much less. Other small bores would serve as well. Get to know it. Deer will not travel shot this way.

Does that 'someone' realize it is illegal to hunt deer in Texas with any rimfire cartridge?

my go to short range gun, Remington 750 Carbine, in 308, out to 300 it's fine, and very compact in tight spaces; best shoulder carry gun ever; it's shorter than your head.... fits across four wheeler without either end hanging over... super reliable,

I hunt with a 358 Winchester but sounds like you got it covered with the 444. Great choice.

my short range preference on does & pigs is a Remington 700 in 22-250 out to 100-125 yards, high shoulder and they crumple in their tracks, hogs in the head or shoulder, same results. Shooting standard Winchester gray box 55 grain bullets as my son is working on a heavier 63 or 65 grain hand load.

Here lately, I have been taking 2 rifles depending on where I am hunting, the other is a Remington 700 in 7mm Rem Mag for large animals or longer ranges.

Many mentioned it, but 45-70 sounds perfect here. Almost wish I had the same situation because I need an "excuse" to buy a good lever gun!!
