My dad is most likely picking up a begera in 6.5 pretty soon from the sounds of it. He’s only wanting to spend about $200 for a scope to keep the package around $1000 total. He’s not a long range person, doesn’t care about reticle.

He mentioned the Leupold freedom. I know I wouldn’t want a lower end vortex, Zeiss terra. Anything else out there worth a dang at 200ish?

I am a Leupold fan but I wouldn’t hesitate to buy a Burris FullField in that price range.

Personally I think all the sub-$300 scopes are about the same in each price tier. Meaning anything from $175-$250 is going to all perform pretty similarly. Leupold isn't bad if they want to go that direction. I've had decent luck with Nikon in that range. Not a huge Bushnell person myself.

Strictly my opinion here.... in optics your budget has to double to get appreciably better glass. Meaning a $400 scope would be noticeably better. That becomes a major hurdle when you go up from there but if he’s spending $800 on a rifle I would think he’s leaving a lot on the table with a $200 scope.

If I were buying a low recoil rifle, and had a $200.00 budget, it would be Vortex or Burris.

I'm sold on Leupold, and have them all the way up to the VX6, about $1700.00. Being in the same situation your dad is on a loaner .243 rifle I was putting together for family, I went with a Leupold Rifleman. I wasn't impressed with clarity.

I sold it and replaced it with a Vortex Diamondback, 4-12x. Has held zero, even after falling off the tailgate of my truck (search my posts, I wrote about it). Clarity is very good. I bought another one for my .22 Mag just like it. I have a Diamondback HD on my .22 LR.

I have a Burris Fullfield 2-7 x 32 on my .300 BO AR platform. As for clarity and holding zero I am more impressed with it than the Vortex only because it has had a lot more use than the two Vortex's. It's been on my AR for seven years, held zero and taken a beating.

Further to all that, buy used at a gun show, or EBAY. $200.00 used on Ebay goes a long way.

I had a vortex diamondback that wouldn't hold zero on my 22. Sent it back to vortex and then sold before testing again. I don't buy sub-razor vortexes anymore.

Pre-owned Leupold VX-1 from EBay or the THF classifieds.

I have 2 of them. Both have performed well. One i bought new, the other i got from Janie for, I think $20. I know a lot of folks here have had issues, but so far so good for mine.

He did end up with the diamondback tactical so well above the 200 he planned on spending.
