I didn't even see that alligator gar draw. I won the big time texas carp Hunt last year but I forgot my carp tags so I couldn't go. Very disappointed 😞

Very disappointed 😞 Alligator gar from the trinity river can no longer be taken over 48 inches long unless you have a permit. There were only 150 permits available by lottery through TPWD. They closed take of them via bowfishing at night on the river as well unless you have the permit. Being the first year with the new regulations, I'm sure a lot of people did not know about the changes.

How is fishing on the Trinity River? And what does an alligator gar taste like?

But I may in the future. Do you primarily fish for them or use a bow?

Fishing mostly these days. I have bowfished them before. I have not taken a gar with a bow in several years, but have taken a few Alligators with one. And will use a bow for a carp or buffalo if I am running juglines and need bait. I don't wish to shoot them if I'm not going to utilize them. I used to go fishing for Alligator Gar as a kid with my dad and nephews out from Sea Rim State park. I then took my son's fishing for them when they were young. Kids always love fishing for "dinosaur fish". Last time fishing for Alligator Gar was in the Trinity with a nephew as a backup plan when we did not get on standby for a Gus Engeling Alligator hunt. We caught and released some medium size gator gars, but only saw one of the real big ones. Been meaning to go back for a dedicated fishing trip or two ever since.
