I usually don’t share all my pig pics and stories but this one was a fun one so I thought I would share.

Last year we had an incredibly wet year and were covered up in pigs all season long. I was afraid the same thing was going to happen this year as well given how wet most of the year was and how many pigs I was seeing on camera in late summer. When I pulled the camera cards the end of September things seemed to be improving as far as the pig numbers were concerned so I was pretty excited about my odds of seeing some deer this year.

I had one feeder where the pigs were pretty much non-existant. In fact out of probably 6K pics from that one feeder I could probably count on one hand the number of pig pics I had at that feeder so naturally that’s where I went to hunt the afternoon of 10/7.

About 6:30PM my only deer I would see that afternoon came by but he was a really nice 9 point. I had him at 5 years old and it was all I could do not to sling an arrow at him given I had nothing on camera as good as him. I fought off the urge and he hung around for about 20 minutes and then left in a hurry. My first thought was something spooked him but he didn’t really throw up his tail and run like they usually will when they see a pig. Maybe 5 minutes later I caught some movement about 50 yards to my left. All I could see was some tan hair just above the high grass line and I thought was it was a Coyote. I waited a few minutes to see if it would come out of the brush but it didn’t so I leaned over to pick up my cell phone and text my Dad and tell him that a Yote spooked my buck.

As I was texting him I caught some movement right outside my brush blind (yes I was sitting on the ground). It was a large boar standing at maybe 8’ from me and I never heard him coming. I froze and then as he started to take a few steps out in front of me I reached for my cross bow. Somehow I managed to get it into position without him seeing, hearing or smelling me. By this time he was right in front of me and facing me at maybe 9’-10’ (that’s FEET not YARDS). He was so close I didn’t even bother to aim. I just pointed the bow at his shoulder and sent a Slick Trick his way.

At that range the thud the arrow made as it punched through his shoulder sounded like a distant canon blast. He kinda grunted and then looked around as if I didn’t even hit him. I could see the arrow buried to the fletchings in his shoulder and as he took about 3 steps back he realized he was hit and ran about 5 steps to the right and then spun around a few times trying to attack the arrow sticking out of his shoulder. When he realized he couldn’t reach it he slowly made his way in behind where I was sitting.

I was a little concerned about his reaction and never heard a crash. I started to gather my things and pack them away in my back pack and then crawled out of my brush blind. I went to where he was standing and didn’t find any blood. Went to where I saw him spin around a few times and still no blood. By now it was nearly dark so I shined my flash light into the brush and didn’t see him so I made the decision to back out rather than tangle with a Boar that’s bigger than me in the dark on his home turf.

The next morning me and Dad went back out to attempt a recovery. The terrain is incredibly dense and rugged so I told him we just need to zig zag the hill side in the direction he came from figuring he was going to double back. Sure enough I found him headed back the way he had come from. He had covered about 60 yards and I had walked within 10 yards of him the night before when I left the stand to head back to the ATV.

I have been super close to a lot of pigs but never one his size. Best Boar I have killed with a cross bow for sure.

This picture shows the set up. The red line is the path he took and the red dot is where I shot him. Yellow arrow points to my chair inside the brush blind.

Sounds like he was wanting to bed down (shade up) in the ground blind you were in. Looks like an inviting place for a hog to take a nap.

Great story & a little scary too! Sounds like your arrow really just pissed him off at first. Good thing he didn't know where you were.
