If anyone has hunted this and has insight or recommnedations to share please pm me. A buddy and I got drawn for the Jan 30-Feb 2 and doing what reaserch we can. Looks like Nilgai are around its all about finding them in that thick S. Texas brush.

Anyone hunting the archery draw that takes place from Nov-Jan please send me a PM.

I got drawn for Feb 20-23! Did a little research on it and found some good info on texasbowhunter.com forum, just typed the "Lower Rio Grande Valley NWR public hunts" into google and found it. They are from last years hunts.

I like this "Hazard" map that Bow Bandit posted. The notes are mine from his post.

Yeah that one was a good read. I would assume most hunters gravitate to the lake area. Anyone have input from past hunts?

There are two..here's the number for the one I prefer when I don't do my own. The other one is Rudy's. This one is on frontage on easy side of interstate right before 186. I think it would be easier and cheaper to just quarter and take to a processer in your home area though. I usually steak out the back straps and take quarters and neck to be ground for burger and sausage or keep neck whole for roast.

Nilgai are big animals--the size of a pony. I recommend a larger caliber rifle if you are on the rifle hunt. If it goes down, shoot it a second time if it starts to get up. If it gets up and runs you probably won't find it. Bow hunting for them can be very problematic. Give some thought to how you are going to get an animal out if you are successful. Some folks on the refuge use a wheelbarrow. Most people who hunt them on private land make a point of not shooting them anywhere you can't drive a recovery vehicle. If you get one, call your wife and tell her to buy a new freezer.

tenet is around sal de rey. Might be easier to go over to Mcallen or edinburgh for processing.

There are definitely good opportunities for Nilgai on this hunt, I shot a bull and didn’t recover it, followed blood for 1000+yards, but never found the bull. I am sure that it was a fatal shot but not right away which is a horrible feeling. In my opinion the best way to hunt them is a cut road with a tripod stand. It might be boring but the most effective, shoot a large caliber from their shoulder forward, I hit the bull I shot too far back and made that animal suffer unnecessarily without recovery.

I'm sorry to hear that..it happens though..how long did you wait before tracking? First bull I ever shot was huge and I was too excited.. hit him good in the shoulder but too light of ammo, 140 accubond .280rem..started tracking right away, he was already bedded down 50 yards from where I shot him. But I jumped him and that was it..they can run very far very quick. Never found him. Just chunks of his humerus bone and lots of lung blood..

Unfortunately I didn't have the luxury of waiting too long. It was right before sunset on the last day. You aren't supposed to be out there too much past nightfall unless recovering a downed animal.
