I saw a bunch as I went over the bridge at Ray Roberts. First I've seen this fall. Are these things good for anything? Why are they protected? Seems like the swine of the sky. A nuisance for sure.

I think you can kill them on private water, buy they are protected on public water.

They all need to die, but the FEDs don't allow it.

I could be wrong.

They are protected. Even on private water. But, if I was raising chickens and a hawk was getting them.....

They dang near cleaned me out last Spring. I had to restock.

They are absolutely useless. Unless you have a body of water that is over populated with fish, because they will sure take care of that. Pic below 2006, pond by my moms house, me and my son catching a lot of black bass and noticed many had these wounds in the back of the tail, had no idea what it was and finally figured it out it was cormorants. They chase the fish underwater and hook them with their beak.

Nasty they are...

They need to ease the restrictions on them. They’re out of hand and in no way endangered. And they’re disgusting.

If you can prove the need to control them you can get a permit to kill them from TP&W.

Oh ok, I was thinking 5,000 lbs a year is probably pretty accurate, 13.7 lbs a day,

Yes, yes you can.

And I hear that shooting cormorant is great sport...

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Had a friend that worked at a TPWD hatchery years ago. They had permits to shoot em.

They can eat 2-3# a day, and can easily wipe out a small pond in a day.
They are protected because birders went to the feds and begged and lobbied.
I wish we could shoot them all. I've heard they're great target practice when duck hunting, but I've never gotten that chance lol

seems someone else complained about depredation permits.

Wildlife Diversity Permits: Nuisance Double-Crested Cormorant Control Permits
The Nuisance Double-crested Cormorant Control Permit issued by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has been suspended and until further notice. All control activities previously authorized under a Nuisance Double-crested Cormorant Control Permit must cease immediately.

TPWD's authority to issue Nuisance Double-crested Cormorant Control Permits was based on the United States Fish and Wildlife Service depredation order for double-crested cormorants to protect public resources. See 50 CFR §21.48. A recent federal lawsuit has resulted in an order issued by a federal court vacating or suspending the USFWS depredation order for double-crested cormorants to protect public resources; therefore, all Cormorant Control Permits issued by TPWD no longer authorize double-crested cormorant control activities and all previously authorized control activities must cease immediately. See Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, et al, v. United States Fish and Wildlife Service, et al., No. 14-1807 (D.D.C. May 25, 2016) (Order and Memorandum Opinion on Vacatur).

If you need to control cormorants due to depredation, you will now have to apply with the USFWS Permits Office (505-248-7882) for a new individual Migratory Bird Depredation Permit (FWS Form 3-200-13). See 50 CFR 21.41.

They are nasty nasty birds. I watch them each year wear out the Shad population. If you find them in a tree over water, you can bet the catfish will be below eating the half digested shad emitting from their butts.

My neighbor when I lived on lake Palestine killed 100’s of them a year with his 22 from his upstairs bedroom. It did look like a lot of fun and great target practice.

A reference to an old Michael Keaton movie.

I'm pretty sure they wiped out most of the baitfish population in our 10 acre lake at the lease. Our fish had recovered from the drought and were getting some nice size and then the water turkeys showed up. Now we have a pond full of water and skinny bass again.

They are federally protected. I heard that you can eradicate them if you operate a fish farm.
They come from China.

Nothing good comes from China.
