I wish I could have gotten paid $10 for every 742 30'06 I sold east of Terrel & a $1 for every box of 180gr Green Box ammo...I could retire to the Rockies back when I worked for the Spt Goods Distr. Tony Valentino at Tony's H&T on Longview asked me one time n a conversation like this one why so many folks wanted a 30'06 in East Texas, and where 270's were better accepted. I accepted the fanciful BS ? and replied 'cause some old time "smith said your grand dad and all his brothers and sisters shot a 30'06, so if you show up at deer camp with anything else they'll run you out of camp...and where are rthe 270's sold??? I replied from Tyler in Smith County and back west to El Paso. ...we a;; got a laugh but agreed that in the deep piney woods 742's & 30'06's were King...and be sure to soak'em in WD 40...so's the 'smith's can make a little money too. Hard to imagine Springfield 1903 not on that list. Also a Mauser clone, and surprisingly not on the list. It pretty much kicked off the bolt action/scoped deer rifle. (It's such a clone the US had to pay Mauser royalties after WW III) WW-III?
The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

Most common deer rifles i've seen in camps over the years is 742 Woodsmaster (I have my Dad's and my Grandfathers) and 700's
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

I could easily learn to live the rest of my .iife with a J.C. Higgins Model 50 or 51 imported in the latelate 40's thru the mid '50's as I recall...if I could find one at better than $$$$'s in decent condition ...in a 270 it would never leave my small stash of favorite shooters These guns are simply FN Herstal FN Mauser Sporters with SearRoebucks private label on them. Every one I've seen over the years was either plumb wore out, or mega bucx dressed up...and usually outstanding shooters if there was any rifling left in the original barrel. LOts of '50's era gunsmith's used these as the basis for their idea of what a custom deer rifle looked like. Ron

My stepdad had a golden state arms Mauser action they had a highly customized stock. It had been owned by various family members.
Barrel was shot out and he traded it off. Should have had it re-barreled it was a cool looking rifle
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.
