Pestered a contact in Austin to see what deal was with posting the Quail survey results up on the TP&W site (they are having some site update snafus), but the highlights are: Rolling Plains is up a tiny bit over last year, but still way under long term averages. Weak carryover followed by good early spring rains that went immediately to hot/drought didn't make for a great nesting season. It will be spotty depending on how much carryover there was the year before, panhandle had some late hatching so might be a little better than the rest of the RP area
West Texas Scalies: decent carryover, more drought resistant species, and up nicely over last year. Numbers above long term average, up nicely from last year. Should be a good season out west
South Texas: Numbers up a lot from last year and above long term average.
Details should be posted shortly I would think

I can confirm huge numbers of coveys in STX (Webb Co.) Lots and lots of young bobwhites.

Thanks for the report. I looked on the TPWD website the other day and wondered why the quail forecast is still for last year.

There was an article in the morning paper based on the forecast.

I’m hearing great things about Quail in the Sandhills. Opening weekend I’m ready for a mess of Blues in the heat!

@ the Chap. Moved 2 coveys in 4 hrs. Scenting conditions were pretty idea, but my dogs bumped them...… need to knock a little rust off. 1 Small covey of mature birds- Long/ Mustang 1 large covey mature and juvenile birds.- East side, can't remember the compartment. Good grass is hard to come by. Heard many shots in south Jay at first light, and saw a group get into a covey in east blocker. There's a relatively fresh burn along the west side of the main road just north of the "head quarters" area. No regrowth present. Wet conditions due to previous rain, and all the tanks seemed full.

Not sure yet, I'm thinking about it...... which usually means I'll be there. I've got a little bob white revenge on my mind after today.

On The Matador this weekend. Beautiful weather this morning, but got warm pretty quick after lunch. Birds were far between, but we were testing areas we had not hunted in 3 Headed to the more reliable spots tomorrow morning+ years. .
