I wish someone would gather data and show top wage earners vs degrees. I think the top crust have degrees but the 70-90% top earners have no degree. Texas median income is half of many blue collar workers. I had at least two guys bust 100k last year with a GED.

One hears that a lot but the actual facts across the board prove this to be fallacy. Those with degrees on average earn more than those without. Increased education equals increased earning capacity - it’s an almost perfectly linear correlation.

That doesn’t mean some without degrees don’t make more than some with degrees-sometimes a lot more. But the overall trend is the opposite.

What I always told my kids is there's three ways to make money. Know what few others know, do what nobody else can do, or do what no one else wants to do.

NP I respectfully disagree. Maybe the people in your realm who have passed the bar, but most degrees, including most engineers, fall short of what skilled labor can pay. No, I don’t know the statistics, but I know our well educated engineers make about what our entry level skilled labor makes. Those are facts. At least in my industry, maybe the oil field, and likely a few others.

That’s us. 4% pass the test to do what nobody else wants to do. 25% of those can’t pass a drug test. That takes it down to 3%.

Years ago I read that folks with a high school education earn twice as much as those that don’t. And those with a college degree earn twice as much as those with a high school degree.

After giving some thought to folks I know, I can think of only one guy that has made a lot of money and has no college degree. I know a lot of folks with big money and college degrees.

You can disagree but those are the facts overall. Any Google search will reveal several data compilations proving it.

Earning can be a product of effort and risk. Not just a degree. Most of my friends have a degree, yet I make more than many of my friends with degrees, and the ones that make more than me are not that much higher on the totem pole than I am. Here's the big difference that I have noticed...when times go flat...job loss or bad economy, my friends with degrees had an easier time rebounding than I did.

Working in insurance my most successful clients mostly had degrees. There were some with skilled trades that did exceptionally well, but on average, the people with degrees did better.

I don’t want to be the guy that agrees with that guy, but the top 3 percent is dominated by STEM degrees

For reference I’m in the employment of consultants world in the tune of 2 billion a year in salaries, and we have spent thousands of thousands researching salaries to stay competitive and set realistic expectations

Oil field is a perfect example.... let’s compare frac, mud, completion etc engineer starting salaries to all others.

Hat tip to everyone that’s hits top 5 with out a degree. Statically a harder path

I do, but I don’t use it anymore. Served me well for three years, and then I switched industries. Everything has worked out well and my loans are paid off.

What are the total work hours the skilled labor has to work compared to the hours of the college educated? Gross receipts compared to the hours worked is a better measurement.

Our minimum is 42 on average. That’s 3 on 3 off 12 hour shifts. The top earners worked overtime except the top paid.
