Hello folks,

This has probably been asked before possibly, but I've been wanting to finally get an official set of good turkey decoys. Currently my choices are between the Avian X and the DSD decoys. I'm leaning towards the DSD, but am wondering if they're worth the extra money?

What is everyone's thoughts?

Keep in mind I've shot majority of my birds without decoys (I cheated), but would like to get more into bowhunting for them and would like the decoys to distract from the movement of me drawing.

DSD are the most realistic and lighter weight of the 2 listed. On the Avian X do not inflate them as full as they go or they will not be as realistic and actually scare turkeys.

Some good light weight ones are the inflatable that can be folded flat enough to fit in a cargo pocket, I do not remember the brand but the patten on them is from a photo of a turkey, I like these for running and gunning type hunts or when I am planning on being more mobile.

All will work

I have never had an avian that was blown up fool spook turkeys. An avian-x blown up "full" still looks more realisitic than half the other stuff on the market. If people can kill them with a foam deocy a fully blown avian will kill them all day. Some birds are just a little shy when it comes to decoy's regardless of what they are. Now I still want to use the most realistic decoy possible, which is why I use DSD. DSD are hands down the most realistic looking decoy on the market. However, if you are wanting to save some money, you can kill birds with the Avian decoys no problem. I ran avians for quite a few years before switching. Do I kill more birds? I can't really answer that. Do i have more confidence in the deocys? Absolutely. At the end of the day, you can kill birds without spending any money on a single deke. Its all about set up and knowing when and how to call properly. I have probably killed 5x as many birds without a deke. However, it is fun to see them come across a field at a dead run and jack up a strutting jake decoy.

The only risk to using DSD's here in Nebraska. Is that we have a tradition here on warm spring days of taking a slight nap after a light lunch. Not that it's ever happened to me, but every once in a while you open your eyelids slightly and the DSD's will startle the heck out of you because, half asleep, you will mistake them for a real turkey. The only downside of all the new style decoys is their weight. They are all hard and heavy to carry on your back in and out of the canyons. If someone ever comes up with a lighter pack able version, they will corner the market.

DSD, there isn't anything else that can compare.
