I am looking at buying a Remington 700 that has a 22" heavy barrel to use for varmit hunting. I would top it with a Leupold 4.5x14 and I'm wondering what my range would be. Not sure about heavy barrels or short barrels like this.

Thanks.

Range depends on optics and skills.

The probable 1:14 twist it has, means it will have 45-55 gr bullets coming out very fast, but they are out of gas before 600 yards. So, the short answer is keep it inside 400 yards, and practice with it.

What kind of varmints and how are you going to hunt? Prairie dogs are a lot different than calling at night.

But I imagine the gun/caliber is capable of more distance than I care to shoot.
