Why? Are you saying you wouldn’t kill that buck no matter how old he is if he showed up in the daytime?

I asked for some help because I have an opinion of his age, but I'm far from an expert. Just wanted some experienced eyes to offer their opinions to see how it compares with my estimate.

I figure 5 but, with the right parentage, could be 4.

I have seen him multiple times the previous two seasons, and believe he is a 5 yo.
So, the reason I wanted some estimates on this guy is because his headgear shrunk from last year. He has less overall length, and definitely less mass. Overall antler size, I'd guess he's about the same as he was as a 3yo.

Could it be a nutrition issue? It's powder dry now and we haven't had any real measurable rain since we got a really good 31/2 inches in early July, which filled tanks and kept everything green through early August.

I know this is the same buck, the only thing new is the big sticker off his right side base, but there is no mistaking the ear.

I concur with your 5 and note that we have seen this also. More typically from 5 to 6, but even from 4 to 5.

It could be the factors you cite and it could be he is a dominant buck and covering the does to many times - it takes "it" of you. A lot of deer breeders lease out there bucks with a limited number of "covers" for just this reason. If your buck to do ratio is out of whack, you can take this and put it on steroids. Those does will cycle in every 28 outs days for quite a spell. Elongates the rut which spells physical toil to the dominant bucks. They are paying attention to the wrong things when it is time for them to get ready for the next year.

2 things to consider.....1). His headgear is smaller due to lack of quality browse from not enough rain during critical growth time.

2). It might be a different deer.
