My 7 y.o uses his laptop for more than I could ever think about having abilities to use one for. Well the keyboard bit the dust. We were already looking beforehand and knew he needed more memory than he has but don’t want to go more than $2-300 for it. Do y’all have any ideas? The old one was a Lenovo somthin’ or other. He likes the windows 10.

I picked up an inexpensive Lenovo at Best Buy a few months ago that was on sale.

Don't go to best buy and don't take advice from people who grew up using an abacus

Pop the key that is sticking and clean it. Sometimes it is that easy.

You can also try to fix the keyboard by using canned air and shake it out while the keyboard is upside down.

If you are broke, buy a USB keyboard and install more memory. That should be less than $100.

I tried to see if it was a hardware issue I could repair but it wasn’t. The whole keyboard is shot and they’re almost half what we spent on it. It was a Lenovo 4g. Also, he doesn’t so much surf the internet. He plays a lot inside a MIT forum or chat room called “Scratch” and he designs elevators, he likes to build pp presentations, artwork, etc. Interactive videos with options with different outcomes. I’m telling you this kid is way beyond most in his computer abilities. It’s cool to see.

Payne I never thought of a reburb. Good idea.

I don't know a ton about computers....but every time I have looked into repairing/upgrading one it just made more sense to get a new one. The wife and I have Asus laptops and they have been great.

I’ve purchased 2 Dell refurbs. Both were well worth the money.

I agree. I buy “cheaper” laptops every 2-3 years. I’ve been buying Dell laptops every few years, because none of them last long in my experience. It’s not worth trying to fix them in my opinion.

Yep, I usually buy a spare or two during Black Friday, If I don't use them in a year, I tend to give them away since they are pretty cheap and buy couple more during the next black Friday

online, going to best buy is the equivalent of going to academy for gun advice.

amazon, newegg, dell refurb etc to buy

pc mag, digital trends, amazon etc to research

it's a laptop for a 7yo, no need to overthink this plus the budget is 300$. Me personally would go to dell refurb and buy what suited my needs & budget.

Yeah even I wouldn't ask for advice there.
Buying online makes me nervous. I don't
mind paying a little more to avoid it.
If it saves a substantial amount I'll get over my nerves.

I've bought laptops from those three sellers above and haven't had a problem with any of them.

Having gone through this, my only advice is be prepared to have invested the money only to turn around soon and see the laptop is cracked or scratched or otherwise broke. You know the risk and make sure it's not a negative experience for the kid, but learning experience for sure. With that said I have learned to use the heck out of the Best Buy premium warranties. This was the only reason I ever see to buy one (the BB warranty). I actually like when the repairs took a long time, made the kids think maybe it couldn't be fixed and we'd be out of luck.

Best Buy sucks never take the advice from the pimple face “geek squad” like said before it’s like getting gun advice from the BA operators at academy gun counter.

New Egg is good to go, I get almost everything for work and personal from them, their prices are hardly ever beat.
