My comments in another thread go me to thinking about how sounds and other things have lead to many a buck having lived until another day.

Here's my list of a few things that I've heard hunters say spooked a buck before they ever got off a shot...

1. The click of a safety being clicked off
2. The squeak of a chair being re-positioned for a shot
3. The butt end or barrel of a rifle being bumped against the side of a box stand
4. Paying more attention to a smartphone than a feeder
5. "Adult activity"

I can think of several more but will let others share their own experiences.

Had a guy once claim he missed a chance at a buck because he was watching two squirrels mating. I didn't think squirrels mated in the Fall so it may have been some other reason that he didn't want to make known.

Being at a different property/ wrong place, wrong time.
Early season hoping for bigger.
Buck fever/shaking.
People who shoot the first deer they see and call it a season.

Dropping binoculars while waiting for him to jump out of the feeder pen. My youngest will never forgive me! As an aside, I'd also like more information on #5. banana

I remember a post made some time ago by someone who claimed he and his girlfriend became preoccupied in his box stand and it cost him a chance at a nice buck.

Personally, I never found his story as being too hard to believe. bolt

I had a hunter who wanted to go out and hunt mid day.

It was in December but it was a hot humid over cast day with some drizzle . The kind of day that it sucks just standing outside.

Anyway, I try and talk him out of it due to the heat but he is adamant he wants to go sit in a blind.

So, we go off and get in a blind....30 min later he shoots a nice 150 class buck crossing the road.

Better to be lucky than good I guess

Somebody on here, that's not on very often, posted something to the effect of this is why you have 15X binoculars when you're sitting in the stand. roflmao It was a great post.

I have never spooked a deer because I clicked off a safety.
I have had guys claim their safety “click” did this, then I showed them the simple process of easing off the the safety slowly while holding it firm. Throwing a safety off with a fast flick is not necessary.

While I have no problem agreeing with you, I feel safe saying it's the excitement in seeing a nice buck that tends to make some fail to remember it.

Which brings to mind how buck fever can be so overwhelming that some can never get off a shot because of it.

That old doe that you don't see that got downwind of you and that blows just as you are getting ready to shoot.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.
