For the most part, there is little to do when it comes to maintaining a ground blind. Something that I like to do a month or two before the season opener is to take my blinds out of storage and set them up before spraying them with a good water repellent made for tents and other outdoor gear. Because my sense of smell is all but gone, I can't tell you if it leaves a scent that deer can detect, which is why I leave them up for a day or two after spraying them so the smell can at least a little less noticeable.

Anything I'm missing when it comes to making ground blinds last for many seasons? What about the chair you use in your blind(s)?

What I've seen with my ground blind is that the bottom of the floor is starting to rot. So maybe tilt them over every couple of years and re-paint or re-prime the bottom and the edges of the floor.

I'm assuming yours is a wooden ground blind. If so, I'm thinking most folks like to elevate them just a bit with concrete blocks or bricks to avoid the problem you describe. Taking your ground blind back from wasps is probably the most common maintenance item for those with permanent blinds that are left for years on end. I remember someone claiming that a coffee can with some diesel left in your blind will keep wasps from building a nest in it, but I have no first hand experience if it actually works. I do know that Bengal Wasp and Hornet Spray is the best stuff I've found at killing them. They don't fly or drop from the nest because it leaves them hanging there dead.

As I mentioned earlier, the chair you keep and use in your ground blind often requires annual attention. I have one that I picked up at Academy that's made for use in a ground blind that's worked very well for me, despite having been soaked a few times by high water. I always like to spray the joints with silicone lubricate so they don't squeak when you turn and move about. It's amazing how loud a squeak can be on an otherwise quiet, still morning. I also grease the pedestal so it turns easily without making a sound.

Mine is actually one of the Texas Hunter guys that has the 1/4" starboard material for the sides. However, the floor is made of 3/4" plywood and is the weakest link on their blinds. Even though it sits roughly 18"'s off the ground, I think it still got some splash up from hard rain. Wasps and mud-dawbers are a pretty common thing on all of our blinds and we usually toss in one of the bug bombs every few months to kill them off. I agree with you on the chairs. I try to spray my chairs with some WD40 before the season if they start getting creaky. I also clean out the tracks my windows sit in so they slide more easily.

We always plan a work weekend just for blinds - clean, reseal, fog for pests/wasps. repair shelves/shutters/latches, etc.

Started doing it a few years ago and it keeps everything from getting too far gone and we have to rebuild. Its nice to have all the blinds in good shape on opening weekend!!
