I pulled camera cards yesterday and saw that two boars have started coming to one of my feeders anywhere from 7:30 to midnight. I went yesterday evening and settled into the blind about 6:00. I watched 3 fat does and a fawn decimate the corn at one feeder then they mosied over to the one where the hogs had been coming in and started hoovering the corn there. I tried for 15 minutes to pressure them away without them knowing I was in the blind so there would be some corn left to hold the hogs if they came in. I finally hollered "go away" twice and they ease off into the pasture. 5 minutes later, they came back but left pretty quickly. I was scanning the area with a NV monocular and about 7:45 this guy showed up.

I picked up the rifle with my PTS233 and sent a 64 grain PP joggin' through his noggin @ 107 yards and shorted out his CPU. I couldn't pull the video off the Flir for some reason so before and after pics will have to do. Hopefully the bigger black boar will be coming back soon and I'll try to give him the same medicine.

I finally got the video downloaded, I will try to get it posted later. Right now, I've got equipment problems, can't get my Cat CTL started. violin

In the video I posted, at about 1:15 you will see a slight shake and then a different view from the scope. I had actually pulled the trigger and had a misfire. I had to clear the chamber so I cut all that monkeying around out of the video. I thought maybe I didn't have the round chambered completely and that's why it didn't fire. However, last night I was organizing things I used on the hunt and checked the ejected first round. It actually had a full primer strike but didn't fire. This is SSA 64 gr. PPT Bonded ammo that I have not used before. It certainly did the job on the boar but with the first round being a dud, I have a little concern about future performance. Here's pics of the dud and the fired round.

I shoot the SSA 64 gr. PPT Bonded in my 5.56. I have never had a FTF or any other issue with it. It's been good ammo for pigs for me. Maybe that first round was the one in a million.

Good to know. I have never had a FTF on any factory ammo I ever had as far as I remember. I liked the performance on the hog and had bought this ammo specifically for this particular rifle that I have the thermal mounted on to try out before setting up to reload a similar bullet. If there was ever one loaded with a bad primer, I got it, which is just about how my luck goes.

The rifle that I shoot the SSA's out of is set up with my IR nightvision. Not as fun as a thermal, but much cheaper! I'm really not a huge fan of .223/5.56. I've thought about selling and getting a different caliber...or getting a different upper...still thinking.

I normally use the .223/5.56 for thermal coyote hunting and I have a 6.8 SPC and a 7.62x39 upper that are also dialed in with the thermal that I count on for hog hunting. When I pulled the camera cards and saw the two boars coming in about the same time, I decided to just take the 5.56 that night as the thermal was already sitting on it. Worked out alright though. I knew if I could get a headshot the 5.56 was plenty good. I shot a boar nearly as big as this one a few years ago with my .204 Ruger. I was calling coyotes and he came to investigate the noise. I wouldn't set out to hunt hogs with the .204 but the opportunity presented itself. I put a 39 grain Sierra Blitzking in his ear from 156 yards and dropped him like a bad habit. Single hogs with plenty of time, .223/5.56 works okay for me. If I am going after multiples, it will be the 6.8 or x39.
