I don't know how this forum is with videos I record all my outdoor stuff like a journal. I do a lot of fishing recordings but if this isn't acceptable mods feel free to delete.

Now you need a dog
There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

Good job and shooting. Wait until you really have some birds! You will be done in 15 minutes with that kind of shooting. Get a $15 bucket with swivel.

Hey NeKro guy in San Antonio has CBR pups, $500, don't know anything about his dogs but from what I have read CBRs just about train themselves. That may be BS I have never owned one, just an FYI if you are ready

If I was gonna get a dog for just dove I would get a bird dog, I think they have a better nose. CBRs and Labs are good duck dogs because they handle the cold weather better, and their cost is better for water. Labs are easier to train than CBRs, CBRs are more muscular and probably less prone to injury. Labs have a softer coat, a better dog to pet. JMO.

Lots of good bird dogs--- my opinion? labs and other retrieving breeds are perfect for picking up downed doves. Pointing breeds (my choice) don't always retrieve. I've had a weimaraner that would sometimes retrieve but didn't love water----wouldn't do really cold water. My current, French brittany loves water and is a great pointer, but whines when i try to get her to retrieve, haha. Though she will help me find downed birds if i call her into an area. I like a lightweight, non-oily coated dog..... I've been around too many labs with their long, oily---(smelly) coats, with lots of shedding, that stinky hair is everywhere, I have several friends with labs who live in the house (some are outside dogs) and their houses smell like it!! ---and they're big--70-100lbs..... my Britt is 30 lbs..... and many american brittany's will retrieve. GSP's are great, more likely to retrieve but bigger/heavier 60-75 lbs. Many dogs with a heavy coat won't do well in Tx until november---my weimaraner hunted in 100 degrees but needed water---my britt can't do over 80 deg. or she overheats (she's mostly black). I'd look at an American Brittany, mostly white with orange or chestnut---and find one who's parents retrieve (if you can) otherwise you'll have to Force-fetch training... which isn't fun for the dog---it's nice if they naturally do it. If you're gonna do some upland hunting and dove--Brittany might be my choice (again... most of them are 90% white and don't get as hot in the sun). Sorry for my long-winded response---I love talking about dogs almost as much as watching them work a field. Good luck

If I was gonna get a dog for just dove I would get a bird dog, I think they have a better nose. CBRs and Labs are good duck dogs because they handle the cold weather better, and their cost is better for water. I agree, but there are always exceptions to the rule. My brother had a chocolate lab with one heck of a nose. My old man raised Brittanies when I was a kid, my step dad was a lab guy. I've seen a few of each that could do it all, but it was pretty rare. Of course there are some pointing labs out there that are bred for that purpose. Brittanies are considered a versatile breed but most of the ones I've known, and that's a lot, were great pointers and meh on the retrieve. Like I said, a few were solid. I like to hunt everything and didn't want to risk a lab with a bad nose (plus I want a true pointer for quail/upland) or a pointing breed that wouldn't retrieve ducks, so I went with a truly versatile breed and could not be happier. She has a great nose, points, and retrieves her heart out even with ice hanging off her beard. Hope I get to stick a buck in the next couple of weeks so she can show off her tracking skills. This is a good hi flyin' white wing find a couple weeks ago.

Birdfeeder appreciate your post, very informative. I have been leaning towards a GSP over a lab maybe because I have a German Shepard and don't want to deal with more shedding but also open to other options.
