Went up for our first cow hunt this fall and got lucky. Neighbors must have pushed this nice little 5 pt our way as they came over the ridge on a run. 125 yd shot and 75 yd pack out down to the atv. One trip to the truck, 2 hunters and one bull on the Polaris. Much easier than putting 2 elk on it with the both of us.
Thankful we have private access and it's open country. We'll need at least one cow to fill the freezer, maybe 2 so we can make a good sized batch of sausage.
Saw a couple of bighorns close to the little state piece I can hunt for my sheep tag as well.

Posts like this make me think how nice it would be to have lived life differently. That said, I have a great life and am fortunate for what I do have.

For what it's worth we have snow, cold and wind coming in on Thursday. Temps will be high around 20 and lows into single digits , will last a few days then bounce back to above freezing for highs.
I'm betting we'll have damage to trees and other plants due to the abrupt temp change coming. If the snow amounts pan out, road closures could be in place . That could affect some folks coming up for a hunt this weekend.
There are pros and cons to this area. Winter can be brutal.

Thank you all for the comments.

Do you have either sex tags? If you were looking for a cow, how'd you end up w/ a bull? At any rate, congrats on the bull.

We have additional cow/calf tags and general elk tags. Both are open right now. We were looking to fill our cow/calf tag when the herd crested the rise about a mile away.
We can get up to 3 elk tags for this area, 1 general any sex tag and 2 additional cow/calf tags.
Cow/ calf tag season opens Aug. 15 and goes to end of Jan for any land off of the national forest, we have private access.
General elk tag is any elk Oct 1-31 then cows only til Nov. 30.
Filled my general tag, now I still have a cow tag, spouse has both tags left.
We eat a lot of elk meat, 2-3 elk a year .
