I have a few questions for yall, I got a Ram 1500 4x4 not sure if that matters for the question, and live in north Houston.

1, Looking for a good all terrain tire was hoping yall could recommend a few brands that you like.

2, where do yall buy them, I normally buy from the dealership but didnt know if these truck accessorie shops are better or discount tire didnt know if there was a better option and why.

3, should I wait for promotions that go on the get better deals such as black friday or something along those lines?

If your not married to a brand then just start looking. My last set I bought a month or two ago are Cooper A/T's. I got them at Walmart for 136 a tire out the door E range.

Look at sales in the paper, discount, Walmart NTB sears etc. someone will have a good deal on a set of tires that will work out for you. I do try to stick with major brands like cooper bfg goodyear etc. Walmart has had some pretty good deals in the past.

Cooper ATP or AT3 would be a great choice. Toyo A/T is also a really good tire that gets good wear.

And I'm a huge fan of Discount Tire. They'll match any price and their customer service post-sale is very good.

WalMart.com has the best prices on tires,and they offer almost every brand online. Free shipping to your local store,and then they will install them.

I've bought several sets of tires from them,and nobody could come close to their prices.

Cooper ATP from Discount Tire. They have a 60,000 mile warranty. I am on my 3rd set!

Discount Tire all day. Their selection and customer services is top notch. Personally, I prefer BFG tires, but no others prefer different brands, just my opinion. Will add, I have had bad luck with Goodyear tires and refuse to have them on any vehicle I own.

I got 71,000 miles on my last set of goodyears

The only brand I've had troubles with is Bfg.
That includes even cheap off brand / house brand mystery tires.

BF Goodrich AT2, 275/60/20. I got almost 70,000 miles out of mine on my Ram 1500, about $1200 at Discount Tire

Tire choice really depends on what kind of off road driving you are doing and how much. The Cooper ST Maxx is a great tire and one of the most aggressive AT's out there. I ran a set on my Tacoma for about 30k before I sold it. I have BFG ATs on my Tundra but they are not that good in the mud. I am looking at the Goodyears ATs that Discount sells or maybe even the Cooper STT Pros MTS. I need a tire with tough sidewalls on the ranch I hunt. If I did not spend much time off road I would probably get a set of Michelins or the Cooper AT3s

BFG AT KO2. Very strong sidewall. Aggressive tread for an AT tire. I got these to replace some mud tires. The mud tires were very loud, and decreased my mpg. If someone drives in mud often, they may be more of value. When tire shopping, I found that many tires marketed as an AT tire, and not that different from a highway tire. The BFG was not cheap, but I got what I paid for. I bought mine at Discount Tire.

I recommend and prefer BFG KO2’s. Great sidewall, mesquite thorns don’t bother them. I’ve got 60,000 miles out of a set on an 8,000 pound truck.

This go around, I went with Nitto Ridge Grapplers. 2,500 miles and I can’t say I’m very happy with them. I bought them for a better ride, which they have, but they also wander all over the road and have a lot more sway in turns. This tells me they are a 3-4 ply sidewalk instead of the 6 ply the BFG’s are. I’m hoping this doesn’t bite me in the [censored] in the mesquites. They also have a very annoying hum above 75mph. Not like a MT, more like a high pitch electric motor sound.

Mileage and puncture resistance will be the pass/fail for these tires.

BFG KO2 have a 3 ply sidewall, most tires have 2 ply sidewall though there are manufactures that offer a 3 ply sidewall tire in various model tires.

There are no LT tires meant/approved for on road use with 6 ply sidewall rating.

Seems you're confusing tread ply with sidewall ply, if you have less than 10 ply tread rating / load range E on a 3/4 or 1 ton pickup, you bought the wrong tire.
Hard to believe any reputable tire shop would even mount a lesser ply rated tire than what the vehicle requires.

In light truck ( LT ) tires, ply rating ~ load range.
14 ply = load range G
12 ply = load range F
10 ply = load range E
8 ply = load range D
6 ply = load range C
4 ply = load range B

Then each of the above load ranges is further defined by the load index number that signifies the tires actual weight carrying capacity that is within the parameters of any given load range.
Example; 115/112,, 120/119,, 123/122,, 125/122,, 129/126, all load range E but have differing weight carrying capacities at the same psi.

Sidewall cut / puncture resistance has almost nothing to do with sidewall ply, it is a function of rubber compound, actual sidewall thickness ( rubber protecting the cords/ply & air sealing layer) and inflation pressure.
By the time a cut reaches far enough into the tire to hit the sidewall ply's/cords the tire is already ruined. The intrusion simply can't reach the sidewall ply's until it has punctured or cut through several layers of rubber. On a vehicle used on public roadways any tire that has a visible cut or slice in the inner or outer sidewall from wheel up to tread mating surface should be replaced.
The sidewall rubber compound is almost always a different compound than that of the tread rubber compound.

In a case of equal tread ply construction and equal ply material ( steel ply vs steel ply) & (10ply E vs 10ply E), ( load index 125/122 vs 125/122) ...
Tread cut / puncture resistance is a direct result of rubber compound, inflation pressure, load on each tire as it meets the object and the thickness of the rubber that covers & protects the ply & 'air sealing' layers and material.

I can't use actual numbers as it is considered protected proprietary information. But as an example for ease of understanding the point.

Tire brand A uses 2 sidewall ply's in an E load range tire, same 125/122 LI - each ply is 1.5mm, total 3mm of sidewall ply.
Tire A uses a stiffer less elastic/pliable sidewall rubber compound & construction. Sometimes but not always slightly thinner.
Tire brand B uses 3 sidewall ply's in an E load range tire same 125/122 LI - each ply is 1mm, total 3mm.
Tire B uses a softer more elastic/pliable sidewall rubber compound & construction. Sometimes but not always slightly thicker.

If you replaced BFG 125/122 load index with Nitto 122/119 load index ( both 10ply load range E ) you certainly could notice a difference in ride & handling characteristics.
If you’re a very ‘in tune’ to your vehicle driver, you might notice a difference between 124/121 & the 125/122.
And almost everyone including any passenger would notice the difference between a 129/126 and a 125/122 or lesser load index.

If everything is identical tire to tire ( same tire size, same load range, identical load index, exact same inflation pressure, identical load on each tire ) then you might have a complaint about differing tire construction or rubber compound.

And it becomes no different than Chevy vs Ford vs Dodge, or blondes, brunets or redheads.
