Looking for a good flashlight for deer hunting that doesn't eat batteries. Any recommendations?

Streamlight Stinger HPL is what I have and I've been really impressed by it. I've used it with buddies and most have asked what model so they could buy one too. It's a legit flashlight but like BP said, it's for sure overkill....I love it

I prefer a good head lamp with a decent red light feature, currently use a Princeton Tec Vizz (instead of 1 dinky red LED like most headlamps, it has 2 dinky red LEDs).
For handheld, I like the Streamlight Sidewinder as it is flat with a swivel head -- you can lay it down or clip it on to clothing then aim the light so you can go hands-free -- and it also has different light modes (green, blue, white). Battery usage has always been good.

As others have said, streamlight is the best bang for the buck. Surefire's are nice but pretty pricey.

I've had more flashlights in my lifetime than I care to admit. Too me the best flashlight is one that is always on hand with a decent brightness, I'm not trying to illuminate the entire area. I can fit two of these in my pocket with an extra battery, always on hand and very useful. these types have served me well and if i loose one no big deal, I order 4-5 at a time. They run forever on a single AAA battery and I have an extra in my pocket if it does. This is all i use now and use it everyday, very handy. AND THEY ARE INEXPENSIVE. 3 Brightness settings and strobe feature: this one is a new one I'm trying for the first time, I like the tailcap push button. Only one brightness setting though,Working perfect so far: Both available on Amazon.

I’ve been using Streamlight products for years and they’ve never let me down. Get an extra battery, keep it charged, and you will have a lot of light for several hours. Some of the new models have three modes of brightness that extend battery life and you can have the right amount of light for the situation.
I also keep a few Coast AA powered lights and extra batteries in the pack as a backup. Inexpensive and built tough.

Always been a fan of Streamlight. Found one of those small ones at my shooting range on the ground. Loved it. Hung it on my neck that weekend deer hunting. Got home and found out it’s only shortcoming. Don’t use the lanyard it falls off and I lost it that same weekend. Bought two and keep them in my pocket all the time. Mine uses one AAA battery.

If you have access to used laptop batteries, they can be opened up and pull out the lithium 18650 cells - usually only one will be bad in the pack of a 'bad' LT battery. There are tons of led flashlights that you can get cheap that use this battery(s), including the head-band type. I have several white single-cell led flashlights, two red, two green, one UV, and even a 2-cell infrared (night-vision). The ones I have the most of are Model # WF-501B ($8). I have a couple of 2-cell headband ones - they last for hours and hours on a charge. Heck, I even got one to put in the glove box of every car, and one for every member of family to keep around house. They even 'accessorize' - I got 'remote pressure switch' and velcro mounting bracket for a few. They all last at least 2 hours on high, and several hours on lower setting - so bright I almost always use low. The batteries don't 'run down' or go low when not in use - and you can buy chargers for like $5 - make it easy to 'top up' batteries before a hunt or a job. Going this route has solved a few of the biggest aggravations for me, never being able to find one when I need it, cost, & battery life/longevity. I haven't had a single cell go bad on me, in over 6 years I've been doing this; heck, I even have about 10 extra spare cells I keep charged up & ready. I even recently bought a '4-cell 18650 holder' that I'm gonna use with an extra 12v 20,000 lumen LED light bar - as a portable utility light - it lights up a whole 10-acre field!

For close-up things such as putting a key in a lock, the $1 lights that clip onto your cap bill work pretty well.
