So in my last post about a gift for my son, Doc Horton suggested a watch that can be passed down at graduation.

I'm really not a watch guy. I have a Seiko that I wear when I dress up and a g shock that I wear every day.

So if you were looking for an heirloom kind of watch in the $1500-2000 range, what brands should I be looking at? Tag Heur is current leader, definitely open to others.

Spend the extra cash, Get a Rolex. It’s timeless.

I've got a Breitling Super Ocean that I really like. Not sure of the current price. I've had it for years.

If it's an analog watch you will have to teach him how to tell time with it. They don't teach that in school anymore.

Why spend all that money on a watch that's timeless. That's called a bracelet where I'm from.

Like Roll-tide mentioned, a Rolex is a great heirloom piece. The least expensive new models are gonna be $5-6k if you can find them.

But Tudor is a very nice brand, made by Rolex. Tags are nice as well. I’d go with one of those two. Tudor will be about double your range though, but you’ll forget about the extra money when you pass it down to him. Also, Tudor and Rolex almost always go up in value over time.

Look into a nice pre-owned Rolex. I bought mine at Salem’s in Marble Falls 20 years ago. They are still there.

Wife and I have had Tag’s for years, but for the 50th anniversary I bought her a nice Rolex ($7k). She loves it, but it’s self winding so she has to wear it or put it on the winding apparatus (yes, I had to buy a winder). That sort of killed any desire I had for a Rolex. I’ll stay with my gold/silver Tag.

In 18 years watches will be a thing of the past. If I were to buy a time piece, I would look for a quality pocket watch. They are already almost extinct.

I actually have a pocket watch that was my grandfathers. There's a company that will take and convert it to a wrist watch for you. I thought about having that done.

Omega Makes some fine watches and they are less expensive than what a Rolex will run you. Personally, I put them above a Tudor and def above a Tag. I had always wanted a nice watch, and about 5 yrs ago for Father’s Day, my wife bought me a super clean Seamaster Pro that was used, but in the box and in perfect shape. I absolutely love it and it has gone up in value since. New I think they run close to $5,000, but I think it was about $1600 if my memory is correct. Def worth a look.

I wouldn't recommend it. Pocket watches lack the anti shock protection of wristwatches.

for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

Mine sits in the gun safe. It's like having $10K you can't spend. Want to buy it?? Its gone up 2.5 times in value though.

Sorry, but in that price range you are not going to get an heirloom piece. For a quality piece that will outlast generations I would look towards non boutique brands, preferably with in-house movements.
I have a detest for Tag, not sure what it stems from I just do not like them. Only one I can stomach is the Monaco.

This is who I have bought the last few of my watches from. If you can go just a little higher these would be my recommendations-

Small world, David is exactly who I bought my son’s watch from. Have used him several times and been very happy with his service.
