I want to get a nice single shot .22 rifle for my kiddo as a starter rifle (already have a good semi for down the road).

I started out with a single shot bolt .22, but it was lost in a fire years ago.

Any suggestions?

Winchester and Daisy made some good vintage single shots. Cricket today is not a bad little rifle but small it is.

T/C Contender Carbine.

I saw a older Winchester bolt single shot that I liked but don't remember the model

If looking at a Cricket, I would get a savage rascal first.

Agree. Bought my boy a Rascal several years back. Great little gun. Sweet trigger.

Yup on the Rascal. Started my grandson out with this, the bolt seems more like what I'd like to transition him to.

Ithaca also made a lever action single shot. It looks like a traditional lever action but has a falling block action similar to a Ruger No 1.

I picked up one of those Ithacas for my nephews couple years ago. Neat little gun and they like it. I bought a Cricket for girls when they were little, no complaints.

I've always thought they were neat. They're supposed to be pretty solid little guns. I've had a couple of chances to get one but never have.
They also made a tube fed repeater but have heard they had a lot of problems with them.

The contender is the first thing that popped into my head.

I have one. As a starter it was too heavy and the LOP a little long. Went to the Rascal, he'll grow into the Ithaca soon.

Here's mine, Ted Williams made by Ithaca. Cool little rifle, but as you can see LOP is long. For a really young kid needing a starter that's the most important feature. The Rascal and Cricket are short, as mentioned the Rascal has a conventional bolt. [Linked Image]

I bought a Remington Model 6 years ago and gave it to my grandson last year. 'Perfect size for a little guy, if you can find one in decent shape. 'Made in the '30s. 'Kinda like muscle cars though - most of them are beat to a pulp by now.

Yes sir, I didn't think about the LOP, just thought about it being single shot.

Holler at me if you get bored with it.

Thanks, everyone! Going with a cricket to start. I’ve got a .22 Marlin that will be the go-to in a few more years. Always feel like a single shot it the smart move to start them off with. Get the safety dynamics down real well before moving up.

Dig some of the suggestions! Definitely going to keep my eyes open for some deals.

My first .22 that was “mine” was a Charter Arms AR7. That and the equivalent Henry are purely fun!

I took my boy to Academy and had him shoulder the cricket and the rascal. The cricket fit him better, so we got that one. I can't speak to the accuracy of the rascal, but the cricket does leave some room to be desired in the accuracy department. He has outgrown it now, but we have 2 girls coming up that will be shooting it.

I think an absolute great youth gun that can grow with you is the CS Scout.
They ship with a single shot adapter and later can be replaced with a standard magazine. Also can upgrade to full size stock later or keep it small.
I've got several 452s and a 457 22 Mag/17HMR. They shoot great.
