I’m reading a John Sanford novel (Lucas Davenport) from 2014, and just read something that brought back a funny memory. For it to be funny, however, you had to be observing and not participating.

So...this guy Butch (not real name), that I did a lot of trading business with (he was a broker) had done three things recently. He had accumulated a serious amount of money (serious I tell ya), divorced his wife, and had somehow ignored that money made required paying taxes. I met him for lunch one day and he mentioned that the IRS had taken interest in getting those back taxes and penalties, and he might wind up broke and in jail. But, he had a plan. He had called his ex-wife and they had negotiated a deal. He’d move the big money over to her for some BS reason supposedly to do with the divorce, and after all the IRS problems finally got settled, she’d give him back 60% of the money and keep 40%. Well, this was way more information than I wanted, so I pulled the plug on any business I had with him and quit having lunch with him. Time passed, and one day I ran into his ex-wife, a woman I liked a lot. I told her that I had talked with her ex a while back and he had told me about the ‘arrangement’. She laughed and said that the arrangement was his idea, not hers, and she didn’t give him a cent back. Kept it all. She left in her big Mercedes.

Butch had a bad plan...
