Anyone shooting .338 federal? Thoughts on it?

Thinking about snagging a savage 110 hog for <200 yard pig hunting (possibly suppressed), and the cartridge intrigues me for s few different reasons.

I like it, have a Tikka hunter in it that shoots great. It will certainly thump hogs or anything else at that range and further.

Factory ammo is limited but available, if you reload no big deal at all.

It''s awesome. If I had a 338 can, it would make a great hunting round.

Don't own one never shot one.

On paper a neat chambering but it isn't going to do much of anything that many other rounds wont do. If you like it get it, variety is the spice of life.

That’s kind of my thought too. It’s really only 100-200 FPS faster than a 308 with 200 grain bullets.

A 338 Winchester has been on my list to acquire at some point though....

I wouldn’t mind having an AR chambered in .338 Federal. I really don’t know why but I do want one.

338 Federal , it’s a prolific killer

Terminal Energy folks : mass and diameter of bullet and velocity are why this caliber is a great hunting option 200 yards and in.

185 grain fusion ammo or bullets - nasty hard hitting pill.

Damn!. pig_popper I think you just sold me on it. I’ve heard great things about the 200gr fusions too.

Mine is a Ruger. It's a great hunting caliber and my favorite hunting rifle. Punches nice holes in things with no drama. I used mostly 180 Nosler Ballistic Tips which are no longer made but 200 grains is probably the sweet spot. I hunted last year with it using 200 Hot Cor but didn't get a shot. Below is the rife and hunt I used it on about 4 years ago.

It is probably one the best options out there for black bear hunting so would make an outstanding hog killer i suspect. If i didn't have a 35 Whelen it would be my choice for moose and bear in the big woods.

Just go 358 Winchester, if you want to shoot mine, let me know, but it is an addictive caliber/rifle combo

They're not very pretty but every time I see one of these I have to drag myself away to avoid buying it. Makes it a lil easier since I don't have a .338 can.

Buddy of mine with Nilgai on his lease bought a .338 Federal for his boy to shoot. Has accounted for several Nilgai to date. Would make an excellent short range whatever (deer, hog, black bear, elk) gun.

Besides ARs, I think Savage is the only one.

Well, there is also the 375 Socom & 458 Socom, equally as fun

The .338 Federal and .358 Winchester(which I hadn’t thought of until you mentioned it) appeal to me.

I quizzed Bill Wilson and his words were in effect, our 338 barrels are accurate, but our 358 barrels are even more accurate
