You left out Californians trying to make this into another California. It would be funny if it weren't slowly happening. Look at every Major City in Texas Demographic.

For me...

70% - AC breaking
20% - Californication (and all that comes with it)
9% - Spiders and snakes
1% - everything else

i don't know how accurate the broken a/c statistic would be unless it
were applied to those who moved here from other regions.
most of them are easily identified by their use of "geeze" and calling
cold drinks "sewdahs"
when i was a kid, a swamp cooler was the height of luxury in this region.
that, and ceiling fans and attic fans. most of us poor folks had the old
fans with metal blades and cloth-covered electrical cords, and since
the crime rate was low, most everyone kept their windows open all the time.

Sounds like we're from the same neighborhood and times.

I had both outside AC units serviced yesterday and had to replace the capacitor. Now less than 24 hours later the outside unit will not come on at all. Called the service company back that did the work and they said they would TRY and get someone out later today to see what happened. The service guy bumped a 12 volt connection when he was removing the capacitor and blew a fuse on the inside unit.
What else might he have affected when he did this?

These new fangled houses are not built to pull a breeze thru naturally nor with an attic fan; nor exhaust the heat out the top of the windows. HVAC is a necessary crutch.

When I try to explain to people that I grew up (in the 80's) in Texas with no HVAC -- only an attic fan for summer and an Earth stove for winter -- they look at me like a dog that was shown a card trick.
