Here's a good start, assuming you're hunting in Texas.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept.

In my opinion, it is a little to late to pick up a bow for this season... Need to put quality shots on animals and that takes time to get everything dialed in for each yardage and be constantly consistent. You gotta respect the animal and putting a good shot on them is one of the aspects.

But if your going to give it a go this season, I have always been taught never shoot when a deer is quartering to you... If he is quartered, make sure its away so you can get a pass through the lung.

He can hunt with a bow till the end of General Season and for me that is Jan 5th this year. Find you a good archery shop and use their knowledge to help you.

What are you thinking of using and that can help narrow down answers.

Late start? sure maybe, but if you limit your shots take to your ability I don't see why you shouldn't go.

A crossbow can get you into the archery season with just a few practice sessions.
Limit your shots to 25 yards and take only broadside shots.
Take your time and wait for the right shot, which gives you and the deer plenty of time to relax before you pull the trigger.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

Here is a link to TPWD Legal Means & Methods page. In short, almost any archery equipment is legal. Crossbow, longbow, recurve or compound are all legal with the exception of 4 counties in the Dallas area: Collin, Dallas, Grayson, & Rockwall where crossbows aren't allowed unless you are disabled.. There's no minimum draw weight required, but I would not shoot less than 40lbs if hunting deer. You'll also need an archery endorsement on your hunting license if you are going to hunt during the archery only season which is currently open.

Hope this helps.\

If I'm reading this correctly, the endorsement is only referred to crossbows correct? Because its under the crossbow section.

You have to have the archery stamp on your license if you are going to hunt with anything that has a string- crossbow, longbow, recurve, or compound. Just looked- we don't have stamps anymore but archery must be on the endorsement list on your license.

Archery is the most demanding of the hunting sports. An archer must consistently place his arrows in a 4 inch groupe regardless of range. As stated you have till january so get practicing. As also stated a cross bow will dramatically shorten the learning curve and increase your range. At my age I have switched to the cross bow as I am less likely to injure my quarry. Good luck Archery is the greatest and most satisfying of all hunting sports.

Absolutely correct. To get a deer within 30 yards is an incredible feat. To get one within 30 yards and make a good shot is even more of a feat. Good luck.

I believe this has been changed, at least for Grayson anyways. You can now use Crossbows in the General Season. Bow only in Archery season, then Bow or Crossbow in the General Season.
