Or take a trip to Strawn and look at the grave markers in the old section of the cemetery. No age group was spared, it includes every age from new born to the elderly.

The building I work in was used as an infirmary during that epidemic. Since it's mandatory for me, I knocked it out this afternoon.

And I've gotten it every year since 1995 and only once have I ever had any flu-like reaction. That was 1998 and it knocked me out for 24 hours. All good after that.

You can bet your behind that I’m getting one. I had a stem cell transplant for multiple myeloma in late April so I really don’t have an immune system. I have no secondary or memory immune system. All of my immunizations and everything that I had built any resistance to was wiped out. I start receiving all immunizations this month over the next 5 months. Heck, I can’t even mow the yard due some fungus (fungi?) that could kill me.

Even if it’s not a match it can lessen the effects.

Yeah, it has been reported this year that they mismatched the flu shot. Science strikes again.

First time I got the flu shot as an adult I got the Flu and did not get another one until I started working for the FDIC where they encouraged you to get one for the greater good of all scratch
One time I jokingly said to the nurse "have you had your flu shot? She said something to the effect of No I quit taking those along time ago, she said she takes a lot of vitamin D instead.

I have not had the flu shot since probably 2008 and no plans on ever taking one again.

Obviously you don’t know anyone that’s gotten Guillain-Barré. I personally will pass. Being that I know two people that have gotten it. Think I’ll take my chances not getting flu shot.

You are say you know 2 people that got GBS from a flu shot?

Yes. My grandmother was paralyzed from waist down and critical condition by the time they figured it out. Took her three years of PT($$$$) to walk again. Still has limited use of her hands.

Other is a good friends father, they caught is pretty early but he can’t walk.

I think GBS is more common than the government is letting on. I personally know three different men who got GBS from a Flu shot or an episode of the flu. My wife gets one every year. I do later in the season after reports of effectiveness come out.

I was in that "I don't get the shot " group until 2 years ago. Got the flu and it was an awful 3 days.
I get one now.

Good luck.

Found this about the senior flu shots...

Quote
The CDC says there are two vaccines designed specifically for people 65 and older:

The “high dose vaccine” contains four times the amount of antigen as the regular flu shot. It is associated with a stronger immune response following vaccination (higher antibody production). Results from a clinical trial of more than 30,000 participants showed that adults 65 years and older who received the high dose vaccine had 24 percent fewer flu infections compared with those who received the standard dose vaccine.
Fluad, an adjuvanted flu vaccine, is designed to help create a stronger immune response to vaccination. This vaccine is available for the first time in the United States for the 2016-17 season. In a small Canadian observational study conducted the 2011-12 season, Fluad was 63 percent more effective than regular-dose unadjuvanted flu shots in those 65 and older. There are no randomized studies comparing Fluad with Fluzone High-Dose.

Sorry for the impact it had on friends and family but those are some pretty long odds to have it happen to not only one but two people who are close to you. The irony is that there is a stronger relationship to GBS and the flu than there is the vaccine. You may want to reconsider.
Quote
There have been several studies of the risk of GBS after flu vaccine and CDC monitors for GBS during each flu season. The data on an association between seasonal influenza vaccine and GBS have been variable from season-to-season. When there has been an increased risk, it has consistently been in the range of 1-2 additional GBS cases per million flu vaccine doses administered.

Studies suggest that it is more likely that a person will get GBS after getting the flu than after vaccination. It is important to keep in mind that severe illness and death are associated with flu, and getting vaccinated is the best way to prevent flu infection and its complications.

How many times did you get the flu in one year?

I get it.
But I’ve only had the ACTUAL influenza virus ONCE in my life.
And the last time was 39 years ago.

It's one Dr. explaining that, because an expert panel for the Southern Hemisphere chose two different strains of flu out of the four strains in the vaccine produced for the Southern Hemisphere, the strains chosen six months ago, may not be a good match for the strains circulating here. Clearly having some protection is better than none but there's a good chance that the effectiveness won't be optimal.

Same in our house. All 4 kids got the shot....all 4 kids got the flu and one got it twice. I got it (first time ever) with no shot, but my wife didn't get it. Flu shot success is marginal at best. It absolutely will not prevent you from getting the flu, it may (at best) lessen the symptoms.

Sorry to hear that. Doesn't sound like much fun. Are you the only one in your immediate family that does not get the shot?

Is there anyone that their Dr recommends not getting a flu shot because the risks are not worth the benefit? I have never even seen a study or article that recommends not getting a flu shot because the risks are greater than the benefit.

It would be news to me. Get mine along with a pneumonia vaccination every year. Don't remember when I started. Got the flu back at the turn of the century.
