Sending a friend some info on Texas Rigging Deeks, thought I would make a post and just sent him that and share with you guys...Below us youtuub I found, this is pretty good, below I comment on that video and also show examples of my rigs...

The Youtub...

1) 2 methods, Decoy Slide Method (DSM) and Weight Slide Method (WSM).

2) Like this guy, I prefer DSM, mainly because the loop is right next to decoy when you pick up, makes for much faster pick up vs WSM you have reach for loop at other end of line, then push weight down.

4) This guy uses 400lb mono, I use the same. He buys the roll, I like buying the 4 foot pre-cut strait lines (see www.snlcorp.com), faster to rig and they tangle less.

5) This guy uses 3oz and 4oz weights, like most do. We have talked about this a lot, I seem to be the only one that likes less weight, I like 1oz. Everyone talks about decoys floating off with less weight, he does't say why it floats off but most say it is because of wind or water current. I have found this to not be the case, the only time my deeks float off is because why weight does not drop to the bottom in situations where you throw your deek out with decoy slid down next to weight. So yes a bigger weight is better for this, but a swivel (which he talks about) makes that decoy slide much better, or just slide decoy to loop and then throw out, and problem solved. I really like less weigh, 2 doz deeks that is 1.lbs vs 6lbs. Makes a big difference, carrying and in small boats. And less weight is cheaper.

6) He uses gear ties, I don't mess with that at all, just another thing to mess with. I prefer untied, carrying and in the boat. If you have multiple rigs stored or packing, not hanging, and piled on top of each other. A tie here would help them all from getting tangled up, but I don't do this, but when I do on a hunt, I just tie an overhand knot that works better and faster.

7) I like his idea of hammering the crimps, keeps them from pulling thru the swivel..

My rigs...

Below are 4 rig examples I have. First 2 are DSM, last 2 or WSM.

1st rig, this is and example of a short line, I really like a short line like this if I know I'm hunting shallow which is my preference, less is better, less room in boat as well, especially in my momarsh. No swivel, not really needed. Also shows you can use anything for a weight, I took a strip weights from old regular rigs and cut it into many weights for tx rig.

2nd rig and 4th rig 1oz weights, and 3rd rig 1.5 oz. I find 1.5oz is over kill, I definitely don't need more. Less is better.

Nothing to do with Tex rig, but rig deeks from front (rig 2 and 4) and back (rigs 1 and 3), that way they are not all facing the same way into the wind.

Here are 2 hanging, left one DSM right one WSM

So, I don't see my method here at all...crimped loops at both ends and decoy and weight slide either way, no matter where you pick up the mono,,,you lift straight up, and decoy and weight stay at/below water and mono slips thru my fingers up to the crimp, and there is a loop for the carabiner...Oh and since I hunt with other guys and their decoys as part of the spread, I add a colored plastic "pony" bead on either end of the line just before the crimp...so mine are rigged...loop, crimp, colored bead, weight, decoy, colored bead, crimp, loop, will post a picture tomorrow.

I like decoy slide and heavier weights. A one ounce weight would be disastrous where I hunt. Sometimes a 4 or 5 ounce is marginal. I use a big carabiner when collecting dekes. We can pick up ten dozen in pretty short order with a couple of guys. About 10% of the spread will be rigged to the back of the decoy.

I am considering 6 or 8 oz claw weights. 1 oz won't get you a dollar on the coast.

instead of using snaps i like to just rig the 400lb mono straight through the keel.

there is no way i could get away with 1once weights. i have 4oz on my teal and 6-8oz on my big ducks. i have noticed it depends on the decoy profile as to how much weight you need. magnum/super magnum decoys catch a lot more wind and need more weight. and even standard decoys very in profile. some have a wide low profile, other have a taller profile. The more wind they catch the more weight you need.

I prefer the decoy sliding and use the snaps also to run line thru. I've had a couple decoys layed to rest after being shot but the rig lives on!

Here is my tip on tying knots....most guys (including my buds) tie an over hand knot all the way...don't do that...start the knot but do not pull the carabiner thru the knot....leave it out and a nice big ole loop forms in the line and that loop becomes a grab handle or you can attach a carabiner to it so all your rigs are not the same length when storing in the boat. Hard to explain but once you see it its like one of those " why didn't think of that" moments. Plus it still keeps your rigs from a tangled mess hence the knot in the first place.

Another thing I noticed a few years back were some duck hunters outside of Texas just cannot stand the "tx rig" cause Tx is in the name. They would rather wind dekes all morning and bite there lip.

Good advice. Just placed my order of straight lines from SNL. The PVC line I currently use is absolute crap. Stretches, holds memory, always tangled...

Anyone near Dallas want to split a pack of straight decoy lines? (snlcorp.com). I have 200 lines on the way, but I don't need that. Let me know!
