Was there a lot of mosquitoes ??? I have never been there but it isn't to terribly far from me, guess I need to check it out. It's just freaking hot every where right now, I was dove hunting in Aspermont on Sun & Mon and it was 101 each day

I never have but I've been curious about it, especially for ducks.

Edited. I was thinking this was big lake bottom, not sabine bottom.

No matter how high a duck flies a hammer still breaks a window.

bump... The first few weeks of the archery hunts are worst for the mosketoes & knats.. The head nets & net-hand gloves helped out... Had used one of the walmart special cover scents ( the one that smells like dirt, came in a small & a refill plastic bottle) it worked good for keeping them at bay... The cooler weather it was enjoyable hunts. Didn't do the duck hunting & squirrel hunts, & not too many dove's, hunted some of the area's around Greenville for them ... Archery deer & the hog hunts mostly, .410 on the squirrel hog hunts.. Didn't see that many squirrels while on stand for archery, considering plenty of food source... Seen more squirrels while playing gol at d country club.... Ya i was a member of a country club (Pres. of foundry's daughter married guy who owned one... till was on a par 3 about ta T-off & some one yelled "birdie" & pulled out me 4ta5 iron & shot a hole in one.. For those who read this, OSBWMA tis AWESOME place ta hunt... Keep your head held high & your powder dry...Best wish's Miss me hunts at OSBWMA...

I have never hunted any public land, but bought a place on Fork this year and have been thinking about trying a little public land hunting at either OSBWMA or Cooper. I'm a little worried about bumping into somebody on public land as I have never hunted land that somebody else hunts at the same time. If I go I will most likely try to go on weekdays to decrease the chances of something like that happening. I would imagine that very little spot/stalk hunting occurs out on these public lands?

Public land hunting is awesome and not a ton of people really do it in Texas. I rarely run into anyone hunting public and if I do it's around where I park and not in the woods. And the majority of people who do hunt public, park and walk 100 yards in and that's about it. So if you like to move in deep, the chances are you will be all alone out there. I stalk hunt a bit on public, but it's not easy in most parts of Texas given the excessive amount of brush. A climbing tree stand is going to improve your odds significantly for public hunting in Texas. I've never met another person in Texas who stalk hunts and most seem to believe it's impossible to stalk hunt whitetail on Texas public - the reality is though, they just don't have the proper hunting skills

Hunted the sabine for years, since it opened Archery - used a tree stand nice & peacefull. Did the hunt & scouting during the hog only hunts, spend the whole day, sun up till sundown & very seldom seen a person... That way didn't bother people during archery deer hunts.. It can get pretty wet, son & i used ta wade knee- ta chest deep going from area ta area. Old yard sale tennishoes & slide feet cause can end up over your head on next step... been thar done that... & by chance ya do meet some one, 99.9% they doing same thing as U, friendly people enjoying the great out doors... Best wish's Keep your head held high & your powder dry...

So, 8 vehicles including yours. 5,158 Acres. If 1 hunter per vehicle, that's almost 645 acres per hunter. Even if 2 hunters per vehicle, that's still very few hunters for a very large area. It should definitely be a rare occurrence running into someone in the woods when those are the numbers.
That's pretty much my public land hunting experience all the time, on all public lands that I've hunted. I don't know where all these horror stories about public lands overpopulated with hunters that you run into everywhere came from. I mean even the areas close to huge populations - like Sam Houston NF - Sure, on a "busy" day I might see a few dozen trucks parked along the side of the road while I'm headed to my area, but the place is 161,508 acres. Never ran into a single individual in the woods there last year.
I think perhaps the horror stories come from these people who park and just walk the bare minimum away from the road and start hunting - since that is the bulk of public hunters, I can see how maybe those people run into each other on occasion.

When it gets cold, there won't be many going. Kind of like dove season, first weeks a lot go, after that not many.

Head up to Caddo WMA for the gun opener, you probably won't encounter anyone....cause you will turn around and leave when you pull up to the parking spot

Any of y'all see any ducks out there besides woodies? No place for them to land. There's no sizable ponds on the area. Best you could hope for is late in the season if the whole WMA is flooded puddle ducks could drop down through the trees.
