Ok, I have a Winchester XPR 300 WSM that I'm about to have the barrel threaded on. The company I'm sending it to say's I'll have to get a 1/2x28 threading "without seeing the barrel", and I'm having a tough time finding a break to match... Does this sound right? It's just the standard XPR barrel.

If the barrel is a standard #2 contour, which most standard hunting rifles are, then you can thread it 9/16" for a brake also. The 9/16" will work fine for a muzzle brake. IMO, 1/2" threading is a little too thin and small for a 30 caliber barrel.

The style of the brake is up to you. I like a lot of the Harrell's brake for their pricing.

That's kinda what I'm thinking. I've looked at thousands of different breaks and only a very small handful are threaded at the 1/2 for a 30 cal.... I don't understand where the issue is, surely not 98% of rifles that are breaked have a custom heavy barrel.....

Another vote for Harrell's.

Great price, high quality. Usually ship pretty quickly.

I just had the same dilemma. I have a 300wsm that muzzle OD is .60. I contacted Nathan Wright at muzzlebreaksandmore he recommended 1/2X28. He has a great reputation so I went with his lil beast 4 port. I'm actually taking it to the Smith today to thread and time. I may have him take a 1/2" and recrown. I'd take a look at his brakes too. This was 115$ shipped, tapered and bead blasted and bored out for caliber. I recently posted on here and got some good replies assuring me that thread will be fine. The thread shouldn't be too far behind this one.

Finally got around to shooting my rifle from the reply above and so glad I got that brake. Really doesn't seem much louder. I was only wearing single hearing protection regular muffs, shot 12 rounds and didn't bother my ears at all. Rifle stays on target great. Recoil feels about somewhere between 243 to 30-30. Glad I didn't get the other brake I was looking at for $50 more.

Good to hear Mag! I ended up going with Witt Machine threaded break. They offered my unusual thread and a basic cerakote to match my rifle for $89.... I got to shoot it yesterday a few times and I do like it. 1st time shooting a break and the recoil is crazy different than what I expected... Pretty cool!

All done and ready to rock!! Put a Vortex HST 6-24x50 scope on her, had the barrel threaded by Class III Machining, and a muzzle break from Witt Machine. All and all, I'm satisfied. Can't wait to run some rounds through her.
