I know this engine could have problems unless they were tuned or whatever. I'm looking at one that is tuned and deleted, is there anything I need to look for in specific?

Is there a diesel mechanic anyone knows in Tyler that I could take it to?

You only heard about the bad ones.
I know of several that (after the cab off sensor replacement) are still in service with several 100 k on them. Same with 6.0s.
Buy the vehicle and put a 7.3 in it and be done.

It is my understanding that the internals such as the crank and rods are not near as heavy duty as the diesels made before or after. It is said they will simply wear out far sooner. Now take all that for what it’s worth because I’ve never owned nor worked on one. I can’t seem to wear my 7.3 out so I can find out.

I would steer clear of the 6.4 and get a early model 6.7

And guys...stop touting the 7.3 like it’s the greatest thing ever. It was a great truck for its day, but the last one they made was in early 03’....almost 20 years ago.

Get in a new 6.7 and see what modern diesel technologies are all about. They now have literally almost double the power of the last super duty issued with the 7.3

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I wasn't gonna say it, glad someone did. Those 6.7s are quick, and the 7.3 is def outdated.
I know the 6.4 is a powerhouse though, always liked the way they looked too.

Why not go all the way back to the old navstar (i believe it was 6.9) engines. Had one in 87 3/4 ton, great mileage.
Sorry for ruining your post K Wood

I agree. Deleted 6.7 is a good engine

Neighbor had a tuned 6.4. He would go through a Mishimoto radiator about every 6 months due to the flex of frame/cab. Other than that, it ran good. he had close to 300k and used it alot for work towing.

It's hard to find one that's already done is the problem.

I agree that the stock form 7.3 is a dog. In fact mine has had significant upgrades to get 3/4 the power of a new 6.7. The one thing we people living in the past have going for us is a reliable motor. There’s that.

The one I know about was done last year after the fact and the mileage was low when it was done. We will see but I bet it would be just fine.

6.4 can be a good motor. Powerstroke mechanic neighbor of mine loves them, good for his business and they can be built to handle a ton of power.

The one I had was a great engine, rest of the drivetrain (transmission & transfer case) were complete garbage, but that was an isolated incident with my truck. My biggest gripe about the 6.4 was the terrible fuel economy.

Fuel economy and the radiator blowing out are two biggest things DPF was almost guaranteed to clog @ or < then 100k also. Minus those thing mine was a great truck

Did they still get terrible mileage after a tune and delete?

Only way I would consider buying one is if I had history on it, it was deleted, and I was getting a good deal on it. No other way I would buy one.

They will automatically get better because they use diesel instead of DEF.

My 6.7 get 15 mpg period. With replacement bumper, leveling and 35x12.5x18 Toyo RT. Terrible really is dependent on aftermarket changes in aerodynamic

I drove a 7.3 for a couple of days last year all chipped up, it ran about half as good as my 6.7. As far as mpg's I'm getting 13.5 around town and 15 or so on the highway deleted with a stock tune

Had it reflashed in Aug, and have put alittle over roughly 4K on it hunting in Sept. Think I bumped up .5 MPG w/reflash-update

We have a couple of 6.4s in our fleet. They are maintenance queens. Regular oil changes with quality oil and Motorcraft filters. Not saying we havnt had a few issues here and there, but they are not the horrors they get made out to be.

I had 30-35 of the 6.4's in my fleet from 2008-2010. When we got them I thought we would have an improvement over the 6.0's, but they had their own problems. The lower ends on them are too light, and I just walked past 4 of the old engines we pulled out and they are still in the boneyard with holes in the block. The radiator issue was ongoing as well, and the fuel mileage was awful. These were well maintained units that were driven hard with heavy loads most of the time. The coming of the 6.7 was a good thing. We ended up spending more money on repairs running the 6.4's than we did on the 6.0's.
