I wont help a "bum", but have offered food or water to a few folks that asked for help. I have only ever had one guy stop by a job and offer to work in exchange for money, or food and of course helped him. There is one guy in Sherman that has hit me up 4 times, once a year on the same job when I am there, his story has been the same from day one, last time I told him he needed an new story as he apparently will never get enough gas to get to his wife in paris Tx at the hospital. I have ever only seen one hispanic beggar that I recall, most prefer to work from what I have seen, they tried to rip me off on a job in California, but they didn't beg .

They come and go here around my office complex in Dallas. Some are aggressive. More so the white crack heads than anyone. I hate being asked/harassed for money. Been kicked in the teeth plenty of times by life and not once have I ever felt the need to resort to begging for money.
Won't give a dime to that type. Even the pregnant crackhead that makes her rounds about 3 times a week. No telling how much she makes in this parking lot alone. I've seen people hand her twenties. Watched another guy hand her a $100 bill. It disgusts me quite frankly.
I have no problem helping someone in need - but I won't help an able bodied beggar/crackhead.

Walking into the Med Mall this morning for blood draw. Guy was walking towards me and as we got closer asked if I had any spare change. I asked how did he pay for the Starbuck's coffee in his hand. He just kept walking. If you are going to beg, at least finish your Starbuck's first.
coffee spelled backwards is eeffoc. I don't give eeffoc until I have my morning coffee.

Now that gas stations have break away pumps, you can just drive off while still pumping if needed. I usually just hold the pump in one hand with a lighter in the other... They move on quick.

Years ago a friend and I were having dinner on the patio at Guadalajara's on Ross Ave in Dallas when a guy came up to us and started telling his tale of woe. Normally I won't pay any attention but this guy was actually entertaining, his tale had a back story and a lot of detail. My buddy and I ended up giving him $5.00 each and we told him we were pretty sure he was full of it but he was able to tell a good tale.

I've done everything from cuss them when I was young to feed them and pray with them as I changed my life.
My father lived on the streets for some time. He may be now, I took out my anger on any bum. That ain't right.

My mil can pick them. Look at their fingernails. What is your mil looking for? Fairly long and dirty as hell fingernails for a real homeless person. I qualify as homeless after a weekend at the deer lease. No running water and such. Makes a man appreciate a crapper and a shower. Most interesting one I had was 10 years back. In Home Depot parking lot and a very pregnant woman, like about to pop, and a guy came up to me speaking Spanish. All I could think was anchor baby and it got me a bit PO'd. They didn't get what they were asking for I'm pretty sure, but I don't know how many 4 letter English words they knew.

My God father was a homelss man for a while. He is a vet has no mental or substance problems, just makes very poor monetary decisions. He is in his early 60's now and back on his feet. He will work harder and longer now than most people a third his age. He never did panhandle as far as I know. I don't agree with how he does a lot of things or his political views but he has my respect.

Downtown Dallas, A friend and I were approached by a homeless guy who asked us for a dollar or two. We figured we’d cut out the middle man and gave him a cold beer out of the cooler. A Slim Jim to boot. He shrugged and took it. Said thanks. My buddy and I got our stuff in order and walked around the block where we found the guy trying to sell the beer and jerky. We bought it from him for a couple bucks.

I've thrown a few bucks on rare occasion over the years, but a couple come to mind with very different outcomes.
First time, I was doing some work on a commercial property that had been vacated. Mostly just bagging trash and taking to a dumpster. "Will work for good guy" was out on the corner, so I walked over and told him I would buy him a bag of groceries for a couple of hours of work. He declined, saying, "nah, my ride will be here later to pick me up." Three hours later he was still there with his sign.
Second time, was at our warehouse bldg on the west side of downtown Fort Worth - where the Trinity River project is going now. We had some homeless guys who slept out back, and every once in a while we would help them with a few bucks. One night, dead of winter, I was there by myself when one of the regular homeless guys knocked on the door. I opened and he said he was cold, could not quit shivering, and really needed something to eat - not money, just food. He also said he had gotten an infection, and to prove it he pulled up his shirt-tail to show me a hideous sore on his ribs. All I good find in the break room was some goldfish crackers, a can of beans, a can of Wolf Brand Chili, and a litre of Dr. Pepper. I gave him all, and a can opener. I felt so bad for this guy, and invited him to sit inside to warm up, but he was not interested, just needed the food. Sheesh!

Ive had the pleasure of talking to many of the beggars on the street corners. Most made 200-300 dollars a day tax free money. Most lived in ratty hotels in the area, some had nice cars and lived in nicer hotels farther away or houses outside the city. I do not give to any of them. I give to real charities. One older man told me how he stabbed another bum to death because he was on his corner, this was off I35 and Medical district area by Parkland Hospital. There was a married couple that arrived in a new minivan, they would get out and put on leg braces and neck braces and dig crutches out of their van, then hobble to their corner, lol. They wont ever get my money.

I don’t get out of the car in areas with free loaders/ panhandlers. I just have a sixth sense when I am in an undesirable area

I beat a guy really bad with a crutch when he got between me and the door of my truck and he wouldn't move. As I look back I feel a little bad for him, not much but a little.

No to street corner bums. I live west of Austin on the lake. When I do have to travel east toward town there are now street corner beggars that have been bussed over to the west side intersections. Do not even get me started on the stolen valor routine that some of these s...weasels try. I am 63 years old and was in no danger of going to Vietnam because I was to young. My old man did two tours. If you are obviously younger than me wearing remnants of military gear holding a sign saying you are a vet of that war then be prepared for an awful cussing out. Or worse.

I was in the parking lot of a Chick Fil A in NE Dallas a while back. A woman who looked down on her luck approached me and said she was hungry. I took her inside and bought her a meal.
Saw an older guy in run down clothes sitting in a McDonalds having a cup of coffee. He was underweight and had the look of a person who could use a hand. I bought a big breakfast and took it over to him. He was very appreciative.
I do not give anything to panhandlers but will help a person who is hungry.
