I wish we could go back to those days. When I moved to Menard in 1985, the bus driver that ran the Ft. McKavett route was known to purposely hit deer with the bus, gut them and return later to retrieve the meat when it was cold. They finally shut him down when some of the students let others know what was going on.
Adios,
Gary

I have some older shooting friends that took their shotguns to school (and kept them in their shop class) to go hunting after school. That was normal then. People respected each other more and had a higher standard or morals. That line of thinking is still around. But the sour apples of society have ruined that way of thinking and up bringing.

I grew up in Throckmorton. Our high school parking lot was full of unlocked pickups with guns in the gun racks. We would work on our guns in the ag shop. We never had a problem.

I grew up in Richardson, which really wasn't out in the country. . In '74 or '75 I was taking a Outdoor Activities class as a PE alternative. That was the first time I took the Hunter Safety/Ed class. Towards the end of the semester we took a field trip to the shooting range at Elm Fork to do some target shooting. Several of the guys in class had their own .22 rifles and we all asked if we could bring our guns rather than use the range guns. Coach (of course it was a Coach teaching the class) said yes.
So the day of the field trip maybe 15 guys all show up to class carrying our guns in cases. And no one really blinked an eye.

Can you imagine trying to do that today?

Think about it this way, we have had a whole generation grow up under the assumption it is legal to kill a baby. Fast forward to the end of that generation, and we see the ill effects of saying people have no worth and their lives don't matter...

Just one of many examples the intellectuals have brought forth under the guise of enlightenment.

This was true of most High Schools even in Austin when I was a student years ago (Class of '72).

No one thought anything of rifles in gun racks in pick-up trucks. You had little worry that they would be stolen or your vehicle vandalized.

If someone was seen walking into the school with a firearm, it was assumed they had permission and it was either for show & tell, a prop or was to be worked on in AG/Shop class.

We simply didn't shoot each other back then to settle differences or go out in a supposed blaze of glory. Folks still disciplined their children (for the most part) back then... and it was important to have and maintain a good family name. All of that is out the window now....many places.

Every day after lunch in high school, while crossing the parking lot for my next class, pretty much every pick up truck had the windows down (because it was hot) & a long gun of some sort in the gun rack. That was 73-76.

The UT tower shooter would have killed more people if UT students hadn't returned fire with the rifles in their pickups.

Kids get suspended from school today for bringing a steak knife to cut there cold pork chop with. You mention guns in a school today and you are going to get an unhappy visit from the police. Sad place we are in today.

Soon you won't even have to worry about pork chops in school as this too will be identified as offensive to some minorities.
Yes, scary to think about the direction we are headed.

This brings back come good memories. My dad and I got on a new lease and instead of scouting out an area to take we talked to the school bus driver and the mail man for where the major deer crossing were. We then looked at the open lease spots and made our picks. It worked out well.

Our neighbor's son was on the Drag when this was going on. He had his deer rifle in the trunk of his car and got it our and started to send rounds to the Tower. He went through several boxes of ammo. I'm sure it kept Charles Whitman's head down. He was a pretty good shot.

My dad grew up near Sayre Oklahoma. This is one of the stories he told me before he died. One day while playing high school football a big flock of geese landed in a field next to the stands. The game was temporarily shut down due to the distraction. The players, students, parents, and spectators from both sides retrieved shotguns from their vehicles. There was a ditch that crossed the middle of the fields and everyone snuck down the ditch single file from the parking area and got into place. All at once they came out of the ditch and started shooting. There were geese down all over the field he said. After running down the cripples, they put the shotguns back up and finished the football game.

I grew up in URBAN New Jersey. About 20 miles east from the Statue of liberty. My mom watched the destruction of the twin towers from her 2nd floor bedroom window. Back In the early 60s I remember frequently walking, unloaded shot gun in hand and my beagle Ginger on a leash the 2 miles from my house to the meadows where giants stadium now sits. This was huge undeveloped tidal marsh at the time. This walk took me through the ultimate of congested suburban living. I passed home after home of 50 x 100 lots. I was never challenged or questioned as to my intent. On occasion a police car would pull up next to me on my return walk home to admire the pheasants and rabbits that were strung on my belt. Gosh I miss those days of trust and common sense.

My first coaching job was in Carrizozo, NM and we of course had the gun in the truck and all around - ranching country. Heck the school even shut down for 2 days for "deer hunting days" because so many families went hunting. Yep, good times.
