I process my own deer every year which includes making sausage. My grinder gets used once or twice a year. It's all metal & after a good cleaning & sanitizing, it gets put away. Usually for a long period of time. I want to avoid any rust or contamination on the blade, plate, auger & housing. Should I coat these metal pieces with something? I tried cooking spray then wrapping in saran wrap, but that stuff gets nasty after a few months of storage. If you use a grinder, how do you store it away?

I have one of those plastic shoe boxes that I store all of my processing stuff in. Small parts for the grinder, stuffing tubes for the sausage stuffer, hog rings and pliers etc. I just make sure the grinder plates and knives are clean and dry before putting them in the box. If they happen to get a little surface rust on them, you can put some 1200 grit wet or dry sandpaper on a smooth hard surface and wet polish them in a figure 8 motion for a few laps.

Food grade Silicone spray and plastic totes with lids. I store inside the house in a closet. Been doing it for 10 years and they stay super clean.

I have an old Enterprise sausage stuffer that is about 100 years old. The paint on the outside has been redibe a few times, but the inside is bare metal.. I wipe it, the blades and everything in food grade grease. Then wrap it in newspaper before I store it. The same goes for the grinder and the blades. When I am ready to use it I wash it with soapy water before use. This is what mine looks like.

Hmmm...I've never heard of food grade silicone spray. I see amazon has it so I'll get a can.
Thanks everyone!

We wash the knife and plate real good and dry them off. Then wrap them up in the blue paper towel and store in a zip lock with no problems.

I dont know why you would have a problem with this. All stainless steel parts I've had my set up for 5 years.i use it, clean it, and store it in the box it came in. I dont even have so much as staining, let alone rust.
If your kit does you should look for another brand I use a Lem

Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

I've got a commercial VacMaster crovac machine that I keep in my garage. With the humidity in there, there are some light rust spots forming. I just bought some of that food grade silicone and applied it to this machine. Amazon delivered it the next day - Hope it works.
I also have a commercial grade grinder that I used for about 20 pounds of elk on Sunday. I have never had any rusting issues with any of the pieces on this unit, but went ahead and applied the silicone to these pieces, as well.
