After spending a couple weeks up North in late July, I was thinking how nice it would be to spend July-September up there. We didn’t get very far into Montana, but Wyoming was very pleasant. Was thinking about renting a place to stay that would be close to somewhere I could work my dogs, and escape the heat.
Any suggestions?

When I win the lottery I'm moving to Idaho. Are getting ready to retire?

There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

Great plan.

Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

Heck Ray,
I’m already semi retired, only do about 1 project per quarter. Just can’t take the late summer heat anymore. I could probably talk the wife into it, but would have to send her home mid August so she could go back to her part time job.

I would take a travel trailer and camp on BLM land . Have the whole place to yourself. Move around as needed. It’s tough to go to a new state and figure it all out the first trip. Keep mobile until you find what your looking for. It’s what I do during bird season

I would recommend several trips up and stay for a couple of weeks at a time, and then you can compare and contrast. Internet research is helpful, but when you get there its oftentimes not as nirvana-like as you had in your mind. We were looking at a summer place out west, and I was sure this last trip of spending 9 days in Edwards CO area was going to be the place (and it was fantastic and very diverse fly fishing), but saw ourselves getting bored after about six mos if we end up retiring there down the road.

Go for it. Find a nice cabin near a stream with fields close by. You'll never come back.

Hold on a minute. Watch an old movie called Fargo before you make a statement like that.

Some places in Wyoming get HOT.
You might find Saratoga, Wyoming an interesting place.
You'll need access to the mountains and a stream or river with some BLM or state land nearby for running the dogs.
Hot for Laramie, here, is 85 in summer and we have mountains 10 minutes from town.
Sheridan has it's charms as well and some small towns scattered around can be very nice in summer.
Choose a spot with some elevation and you'll avoid rattlesnakes as well.

We have a good friend that takes his small Airstream over to Saratoga every summer and leaves it there for numerous trips from Laramie. You could find a nice campground that makes monthly or weekly rates and has some amenities near most good sporting areas, fishing and hunting.

I’d probably be packing up and headed south before the first snow.

My grandparents did that when they retired. They owned an awesome log cabin outside Fairbanks, Alaska on a few hundred acres. They pulled their travel trailer or drove their motor home up to Fairbanks in May every year and would spend 7-10 days driving up. They would stay until the middle or end of September and then would come back to their place in Arkansas. I used to go up in the summers and stay for a couple weeks. I guess they did that for about 15 years until they decided to sell the place in Alaska and stay in Arkansas full time.
