Yesterday, while waiting for the UPS truck (that never arrived!) I decided to play around with my new Nikon. There's an old, 3 story home, the Sequist House, nearby, and it has a very neat weather vane on it. I selected it as my "target." I'm pretty darned impressed with this camera; it's a lot smarter and has a lot more function than I do!

I'm hoping to get some good wildlife pics once I can figure out which end of the camera I'm supposed to look into.

My funky little range finder had problems picking up the weather vane itself, and was bouncing between 120-150 yards, and everything in between. My uncalibrated eyeballs told me it was around 100 yards. What I find amazing is that the camera, at that range, and given the target which doesn't present much surface area, could find enough metal to lock onto in autofocus mode.

Yes, I do have a tripod and I do use it frequently. Old "shaky Jake" here can't hold a big lens camera steady enough to free-hand and take a decent picture. I also bought a remote control for the camera so that, once I get it on target, I don't mess things up by using my finger to pull the trigger. Getting old ain't near as much fun as folks might tell you it is. . .

Here's the set-up I used:

I bought one of those last year like you it way smarter than me but it did save me from embarrassment saw big wide deer in the trees thought he was big took pics at 300 or so turned out those long points were 4 and 6 instead of 10 and 11 als if you can take a pic of a deer you could have easly killed him so it makes em easy to walk other than good binos one of the better purchases you can make

Not only is it good for that, fredgus, but I'm going to start using it as a spotting scope for my load development at the range. I think this big baby can really get in close and personal with targets at 2-300 yards with no problem at all. I can study the image on the screen, adjust the scope, and never leave the bench. Instead of taking target down and filing them, I will have pictures that I can put in a file. And I'll be able to see even the 22 caliber holes!! Camera and spotting scope all rolled into one device: I think I'm loving it!! I'll let everyone know how or if it works out the way I think it will.

Went out to the range and set a target stand up at 212 yards from my bench. I made a 22 caliber bullet hole in the middle of the bullseye. Went back to the bench and made this hand-held pic of the target. I do believe that, with some work, it will be an effective spotting scope for the range!

SnakeWrangler, I have $821.00 in the set-up, not counting the tripod, which I already had. I know that $821 isn't a "round" number, but it's the best I can do for you on short notice! :-)
