Mule deer. What’s the bucket hanging from the feeder for?

Thanks for all the responses, I thought it was a mule deer but wanted more confirmation.

As far as the setup, it was there when we took over the lease. Best we can tell it was used to put alfalfa hay in.

I hunted south of Dryden several years ago and saw a couple of whitetail. Saw one pretty nice buck, but passed, because I was after a muley. Didn't happen.

There’s plenty of whitetail deer south of 90 between Sanderson and Dryden. I’ve killed a lot of them as far south as the river. Some very nice mule deer too.

That’s a mule deer in the photo.

I’ve seen a lot of whitetail on they stretch but all the mule deer I’ve seen have been scrubby.

When you say nice what caliber are you talking?

Some real neat country I love the area along the river around Langtry up thru Sanderson and north of sanderson.

Used to be tons of white tail along 90, close to Sanderson, especially on 90 west of Sanderson. Something happened, in the last 20 years, (I suspect anthrax or something similar) that put a major dent in both WT and MD populations. Same same north of Sanderson on 285.

Muley. Note the black tip on the tail. I grew up shooting them in CO.

We killed some 150+” mule deer down there. I got to see some true giants up close during January when they were rutting and I was whitetail hunting. I was lucky enough to hunt quite a few ranches in that part of the country. We Mule deer hunted one rough ranch down on the river for years. This place was east of Dryden and had Lozier Canyon running through it. 8 miles of dirt roads to get to the ranch, tent camping, haul in your drinking water. There may not be any whitetail down there anymore. That was 30+ years ago.

Thanks

Did that bucket have a hole in the bottom of it? I was on a ranch where the lease hunters had trouble with the wind blowing the corn off their spinner plates and emptying their feeder to quickly. So they cut a hole in the bottom of the bucket and put it over/around the timer and spinner plate, screwing it to the bottom of the feeder barrel. That kept the wind from blowing the corn off but put all the corn down directly under the feeder. They built some troughs to go under the feeder to catch the corn/pellets after and Anthrax outbreak to keep the feed off the ground.

Not that many years ago there was a ranch for sale they had Loizer canyon running thru it. It was 1100 or 1200 acres and they were asking $300 some odd dollars an acre.

Had a lot of 90 frontage, several water wells and a cabin.

I should have tried to buy that one

Mule Deer. Always look at the tail as that is what game warden is going to do even if you say 'hybrid'. Had to pass on a really really good MD in that area about 5 years (season was closed). On way back to camp. He was facing me in heavy brush and really thought it was a WT as well as did my partner. 40 yards and would not move to confirm. Partner said shoot him. I said no confirmation but believed it was WT. He did a 180 and tail was MD. Thank goodness, game warden was at camp 1/4 mile we go there. We did the same bucket tied under feeder motor to catch wind blown corn with holes drilled to drain water. Never bothered the deer
