Have any of you had luck with store brand fans, like Harbor Breeze at Lowes, or Hampton Bay at Home Depot? I have some Hunter fans that are eight years old and are shot. Two have light kits that don't work. One has a humming motor.
I was told a long time ago that the cast iron fan made by Hunter called The Original was the only American made Hunter and the rest were from China. I had an electrician tell me that they were all junk.
I know you can spend hundreds for Casablanca fans, a few others that are in that price range, but I don't want to go that route. Styles change, etc. I would rather buy fans in the range of the prices in Lowes or HD. Eight years ago I thought that maybe the Chinese Hunters may be better than Harbor Breeze. Who knows?
Any suggestions? I need at least a couple of new ones now.

I installed some Hampton Bays in my old house in Irving, Still working fine when I moved, they were getting close to being 20 years old.

I can get the breeze mostly from the waist down. Here is the one I use when I sleep. No sure on the brand of our ceiling fans, but I believe they are Hunter brand. Bought and self installed about 42 years ago. For the old timers, they were bought at Payless Cashways Lumber. The ones at the cabin Ruidoso are Hunter brand, no problems there and we installed them in 2000. The same with the ones in the cabin in Runnels county, Hunter brand. They are all at the 20 year mark.

I agree with everthing you ststed
I have had good luck with Hampton Bay.
If the 2nd amendment was written just to include guns for hunting, why is there not an amendment to protect fishing poles?

I seldom use it anymore because its toward the foot of my bed. I can get the breeze mostly from the waist down.
Here is the one I use when I sleep. I keep it aimed at my head. Bill, In conversation with my Optometrist I mentioned this horrible Tinnitus I have and that I sleep with a box fan near my head to help me sleep. He told me I shouldn't do that. He said that sometimes in our deepest sleep we may slit our eyes. He said I could develop dry eye. Now the fan is there, but pointed the other direction. He suggested no ceiling fan blowing down toward the bed at night either for the same reason, so we don't.

Hunter Original is now made in China
can be had for $500-$600 on Overstock.com and other online retailers
my Hunters are 22 years old, they run 24/7/365 and still running today
If your Hunter is shot after 8, it must have been a really crappy one from China

I just replaced two Originals that ran 24/7/365 for 25 years before the low speed wouldn’t run anymore. They replaced one under warranty and wanted me to ship the other one to Corpus. I replaced it with a reconditioned Original from Amazon. I’m good for 25 more years. Don’t be afraid of the better Hampton Bay fans, I have those running the same duty cycle too.
Come to think of it, I have Originals running for 35 years or more in the lake house too, but not continuously.

I install harbor breeze fans every year in our house. One day I’ll learn not to buy them anymore. The outdoor ones are the worst

Had a Hunter installed today,
the trip:
Light switch no work, changed it, found a bent blade holder, new blades and new holders, new holders scrape.... took it down, installed a complete new one.
Most of the time, installing a new switch is the way to go, and its an easy do.

Agree with Hooker. Fans are very simple to diagnose.
If installing one, Get the heavy azz fans with oil resoirvoir for the main bearings/motor. Your great grandkids will have to deal with it if it ever fails. I like cast iron Hunter. Just make sure you have adequate support holding it up and don’t just use the J-box

My house now is about 12 years old with numerous ceiling fans, and I am sure they were just builder grade fans, have not had one issue. One fan is hooked up to 4 switches around the living room area. I am thinking you have more of an electrical issue versus getting bad ceiling fans

I appreciate all the feedback. The reviews on all of them vary. Seems like Chinese Hunters have lower ratings than the other Chinese fans, like Hampton Bay or Harbor Breeze.
I know the Hunter Original probably is still a top notch fan. I installed one in the early ninety's in a previous home. It's probably still going. But now in this home, I would have to get in the attic and install better supports. And I'll be on a ladder that will be on decking on beds, (clumsy sounding already). And I'm not going to pay an electrician to come out and do something I can do myself.
As far as a potential electrical problem, the voltage is fine. I know they are wired correctly. That part is too easy.
I figure I'll have my wife pick out some fans she likes and see if I can get another 8-10 years out of them.

We are looking at a new fan for the back porch. Wanting one that’s 7-8 foot span, but I don’t recognize any of the brands and have a hard time paying $500-$700 for something I’ve never heard of. Harbor Breeze & Hunter have never let me down.

I installed 10 fans when we remodeled our house and had to exchange 3. 9 years later, they are all running perfectly. If they are in perfect shape when you install them, they tend to last. Even if one has a cord that isn't smooth, take it back.
They all came from Home Depot or Lowe's.

I've been in my house 11 years bought a expensive Hunter for the living room and a couple of 29 dollar Walmart fans for the back porch. All are still working great. The fan blades on the fans on the back porch are drooping but work fine when running.

Also, some dimmer switches aren’t rated for fans. Use dimmer switches that won’t burn up the motor

They make outdoor fans for that very application My outdoor fans still sag over time so about every three years I turn the blades over. I have done it twice.
