A good friend of mine is flying in from Italy to go on a BBQ tour of central Texas. While in the Austin area he wants to try Mexican/Tex Mex food. Any recommendations of a good Mexican restaurant or Taco Joint that isn't a chain.

Angie's Mexican Restaurant @ 1307 E. 7th St, Austin TX 78702. They have the best salsa and enchiladas in Austin. Have been trying to find better for 21 years, and haven't found one. Their corn tortillas are made in house, and are terrific as well.

Jardin Corona on Pond Springs Road is damned good

I am personally not a fan of Chuys though it's very popular with tourists

Off the top of my head in no particular order:

Fresa's
Grizzelda's
Tamale House East
Matt's Famous
Chuy's
Joe's Bakery
Suerte
Fonda San Miguel for Sunday brunch
Veracruz
TONS more if you look

2nd this. We used to live in walking distance from there. Ate there so much we felt like we paid for their expansion about 12 years ago. It's still a great place and they have another one in Cedar Park close to where we moved.

It's a must stop for me when in Austin. Brisket Taco with chips and Queso is my go to order at lunch or dinner. Real Deal Holyfield for breakfast.

Chuy's is pretty overrated IMO.

My favorite Tex-Mex place in Austin is The Chupacabra Cantina on 6th.
