If a deer head and cape has been salted, how long can it stay in a freezer and still be ok to have mounted?

It’s depends on what “salted” means. Eyes turned ,ears split ,hide fleshed etc. A taxidermist should tell you

Freezer burn is what damages the cape. Face and ears should always be wrapped in the middle of the cape for protection. I've heard of salted and dried hides lasting decades. I tried to get mounts out of the freezer within 6 months of hunting season. Once the hide is freezer burnt, the quality of the mount suffers.

Thanks for the rely. I have one that has been in the freezer for a few years. Just trying to figure out if it is worth taking to a taxidermist at the point.

I’m a retired taxidermist of 23 years. Deer capes are easy to buy & cheap. I would just toss it and get a cape. Good luck.
