Excellent article : Knowing history is crucial.

...and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. Gen. 1:28

Someone once wrote about the Romans, "I do not admire them, but they were a great people." That sums up Rome succinctly. Many of the Founding Fathers were trained in the Classics and incorporated the best of the Roman ideal into the philosophy of this republic.

Yet any modern student of Roman history will definitely feel a bit uneasy at the comparison of the two republics simply because Rome was built on the blood of conquered peoples and passed from the republic stage into that of imperialism. Three of the reasons the Roman Empire eventually collapsed upon itself was because it was spreading itself too thin militarily which resulted in disastrous defeats that would make Custer blush, an immoral though brilliant culture and political leadership that was often corrupt which lead to civil wars. For better or for worse the U.S. has many of these same attributes.

Not the first time I've heard the comparison of the U.S. to Rome. bang
