Do you get to hunt much? I’d use whatever rifle/scope/ammo I use for everywhere else I hunt.

I was there last year. On camping- If you want it take it with you. You will find a table and overhead shed , one dry toilet and one water hydrant. It was very cold for most of the hunt last year. If the rut is on and you find a hot doe you will have your choose of several bucks. Check the canyons. shot distance can be anything out there. If you find the doe you can usually get within 100 yards, they are not to spooky during that time. Just about any common deer rifle will work with correct shot placement. Getting one out by your self can be difficult. Have fun.

I hunted in January of last year. Photos and story posted back then. It was cold and windy. Layer up! The campsites are good. The staff is great. I used a 270 with 150 grain. It could be a fairly long shot. But since your hunt will be "guided", you should have no trouble finding a good management deer. Good footwear is a MUST! Good Luck!!! Hope you bought a TX Lottery ticket yesterday. That's pretty good, drawing for that hunt with only 1 spot available BTW, the website states "on top of Elephant Mountain. If you're "on top" the terrain is Much Better. Maybe it won't be as tough. Also, hunters are not allowed "on top" for the unguided hunts. due to the sheep herd, residing there. Take a good camera.

I drew archery MD for 11-14Nov. I am planning on taking a scouting trip out there here soon just to see what I have gotten myself into. I will gladly share anything i learn about it once I have returned from both trips.

When I was out there, we were told that most of the WMA is closed to the public, because of the sheep program. However, it might be different for a drawn hunter, there to scout. Before you drive out there for scouting, it might be a good idea to call ahead

Scalebuster - I don't get to hunt as much as I'd like but my question was more out of curiosity and a conversation starter. I'll probably end up taking my .280 or the 7x57 that I built.

JWM - ok now I'm really excited. I didn't know the Bighorns were out there.. I have hunted Black Gap and Big Bend State Ranch.. .both are beautiful. But I'd love to see the Bighorn heard at Elephant Mountain. I'll be packing my camera....
