I've seen a lot of comments about, "I never shoot anything in the pen." So I just wondering how many of you hunt that way. I don't. I've killed a large number of nice bucks while they
were in the feeder pen. Never seemed to have any effect on the number of deer in the pen the next day. But, I'll keep an open mind and listen to what you have to say about hunting the pen.

I shoot them in the pens, deer will be there the next night, next day and sometime within a few minutes eating next to their dead friend. Just depends on the area though. Some places deer won’t show up the day you fill a feeder. Others will be waiting for you to leave to eat the corn from the test spin. Same here.

I shot my buck last season under the feeder. Kind of anti-climactic. I prefer rattling, or watching an area while bucks are chasing. I know that dead is dead, but still didn't seem as rewarding. Not knocking hunting over a feeder, just wasn't as exciting.

For the most part I have shot mine out of the pen. From my experience no matter how used to the feeder and pen the deer are they will eat feed outside of the pen over inside given the chance.

If it's a buck that when I first see I know that I wanting to take him, then I take him on first shot opportunity preferably outside the pen, but I've shot many in the pen. I just would not recommend shooting deer in the pen often as that would be a learning deterrent.

I don't mainly for 3 reason....I have a protein feeder in my pens(yeah I know I hunt over my protein feeders), none of my blinds are tall enough to shoot over a 34" tall hog panel and finally I put out 25# to 40# with my road feeder before I get into the blind. If I only had a spin feeder and blind 10' or taller then I might shoot a buck in the pen. Feeding the roads changes the whole game when I hunt, so I would guess 75% of the deer that show up to my feeder that hunt will stop on the road corn and never make it to the feed pen. They come in at night and clean up that corn. With the road feeder I rarely run my corn feeders more than 2 to 5 seconds per feeding. I can't say that I would never shoot a buck in my pen but it would take a rare occasion when the buck was only in the pen and never on the road corn.

I don't think I've ever shot anything in a pen....nothing against it, but I tailgate feed roads and other clearings heavily the night before and I also use a satellite feeder about 125 yards from my pen either at my 9 or 3 o'clock depending on cover....always shoot my deer there or somewhere in between.

I prefer to shoot them outside the pen if a shot presents itself, though I have shot a few inside the pen. However, I've also missed a few hogs and deer inside the pen due to the rounds hitting the cattle panel wire (once, there was a streak in the dirt where the bullet skidded across the ground under the belly of a large boar; he made it to the next county within minutes after tearing out of there).

I'll shoot dove out of trees, quail on the ground, deer in a feed pen. Doesn't bother me one bit. Is it more fun when a bird is flying or you catch a nice buck chasing a doe across a mesquite flat? You bet it is - but dead is dead.

If your concern is contaminating the area with dead deer smell, I would not be worried. Shot a nice 8 point two years ago that was trailing a doe. Buck made it about 5 yards (bleeding profusely) and piled up. Doe came back and ate acorns all around her dead suitor. Didn't bother her in the least.

For myself the shooting in a pen vs. outside the pen is in the number of deer needing to be shot each year. If you are only shooting one deer or two deer a year it is not going to be an issue. But when you have to shoot 50,100, 200 or more deer every season there is no need to educate the deer to be shot at inside a pen. The biggest issue when shooting deer at any blind is going to be what the hunter does after the shot. Vast majority are going to get out of the blind and all the deer left at the feeder are going to see the hunter exit the blind. You just educated those deer to what a gun shot means....human contact. The next time it happens they are less likely to show up and after a while a neighbors gun shot can send them to the brush.

You put the pen up to limit what goes inside, not limit what you shoot, right?

I shoot them wherever and whenever I have the best opportunity. I “prefer” to shoot them outside the pen for only one reason: so I don’t have to undue the hog panels or lift it over the panels to get it out. Saves me a lot of work. Had I been the one that originally installed the panels I would have a convenient gate built into one side for easy access. However, that’s not the case.

I spine shot a doe with my longbow some years ago and she dropped right under the feeder. I gutted her right there and hauled her back to my ranch house for processing. I came back that evening and hunted the gut pile thinking a yote might come by and another doe showed up. She kicked open the stomach and ate the corn out of it.

I think the only thing you have to think about in reference to shooting Deer in a feed pen is the ease of getting them out.

That is why I always build a gate in my pen so that I can drive a utv into the pen and haul the deer away.
