I'll be hunting a place this year that was wiped out by Anthrax. I'm imagining it being about like my E Texas hunting 20-30 years ago tired

There is the exception and my only interest is in finding that exceptional buck that I'm sure exists, but that I've never seen. Hogs are pretty thick and I shoot them year round. The more hogs that I shoot, the more deer that I see. Coyotes are also pretty thick, but I'm lucky to get 3 or 4 a year. Coyotes are the only animal here that get me excited to shoot one. Hogs bore me, but they are such a pest that I have to deal with them. The last couple of years my wife has gotten into deer hunting and she's taken a few spikes and a nice 8 point. We had good pics of him coming in on the game camera every morning and the day she shot him was one of the best days of hunting that I've ever had. We saw him coming in from a distance, and when he was 120 yards out, standing broadside in our food plot, my wife made a perfect heart shot. He jumped, ran into the trees and died about 50 yards away. For me, that's a lot better then if I had shot him!!!!

Nice one, Eddie. Congratulations to your Wife.

I pass on lots of deer, probably taken 1 buck in the past 7 years. Anymore I have pretty high standards for what I will shoot and get my hands dirty for.

Now that I have a new place in the Hill Country, I'll shoot more, just to clear a path. At this point cull bucks and does are the primary target, hogs and coyotes whenever possible. A mature buck would need to be pretty special [Linked Image]

I once followed that old saying, "I don't hunt to kill but kill to have hunted." As I too have grown older, I hunt mostly just to see what passes me by.

Yes, if you live long enough, you realize the only thing you need to prove to yourself is that you were able to get out of the bed each morning.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Still like to hunt but not sure I’ll kill anymore. I killed a nice buck last year that I didn’t find. Grandsons showed up to help me but no luck. Makes me sick. Not much room left on the wall after 50 years of hunting. Don’t need another one anyway.

I can’t wait. Comfortable elevated blind, thermos of coffee, good book. I’ll take two does this year. Only a small chance I’ll see a buck I want to shoot, unless it’s the crooked spike I’ve hunted hard. A very elusive critter he is.

Only year I haven’t killed a deer since about 1961 was 1980, when I had brain surgery.

I have backed off the trigger on deer the last few years but I will kill a mature buck that is what I believe to be 6+ years old with character that speeds up my heart beat. I let many predators pass except for hogs enjoy killing them especially spot and stalk at night.

I hunted in Llano for 43 years since I was nine and came away with a couple of bucks scored close to 140" but that was me measuring and not an expert. They are both in my sig. Also in my sig is a nice wide 8 that I raised for several years, and a 10 that i should have waited on. In 2012 after my father and his partner could no longer hunt I got a lease in Breckenridge and shot a very tall 9 point (ninth point was broken off) and haven't shot a buck since then. Meanwhile my son has shot several nice bucks and my taxidermy bill has been high. I just don't want to shoot them unless they challenge the bucks I have shot before.

I have shot several hogs and coyotes, and that's great sport too!
