Pros cons wanted. Wife’s cousin wants to use our place and barn for wedding /reception to save money.

I am not a fan of this idea. My wife thinks it will be ok.

Location is out about 30 minutes from Ardmore OK, and we all live in dfw metro, so about 2 hrs away. There would be some sort of liability insurance taken out for this, and there will be an expectation of liquor of some sort there.

We will pay for nothing, all costs will be on wedding couple.

Thoughts? Experiences?

I vote "NO". Shoulda been a poll. So many things can go sideways. Now if the wife wants to do it, I have no good way for you to get out of doing it without upsetting her.

Neutral (not family owned) sites are always better for any kind of party, especially a wedding. At your place, you will have to clean or fix, or both, something afterwards - guaranteed.

Booze, people you don’t know, bad possibilities abound. I would not do it. Lots of risk for you and no reward.

Forget the occasion. Would you invite strangers to your place to get drunk? Simplest way to look at it.

Tell the cousin there's a fee... which happens to be the cost of the nearest venue for rent. Send them there.

We had my nieces wedding at our place. ~270 people, but was Mormon wedding so ~no booze. Went ok.

I've helped with two like what you are asking about. Biggest problem is pot-a-potty's or lack of proper number needed. I stayed and helped clean up after they was over along with the brides parents. Both took two hours of hard work but doable. NO problem with drunks as at both places the brides mother walked around and took beers out of peoples hands, saying you have had enough and you got a long way to drive home.
A plan 'B' needs to be in place unless people can drive to the barn in a downpour.
Your wife wants it, so go for it and have fun.

If you end up saying yes, be sure they rent the nicer port a can that come in as a trailer with multiple toilets, those are much nicer than your traditional port a can.

Nope, nada not worth the liability risk (booze or not). If you do elect to go forward, I concur with Herbie Hancock on the porta a can trailer rental. Those are really nice

several concerns as listed above ... definitely want to have some type of liability policy to protect your property and yourself in case there was an accident. Alcohol would be another concern as some people just don't stop when they should. Especially with a larger (100+) group of people that you don't know the majority ... personally, I would be more than a bit over hesitant

Normally, I would say no. Your Wife may not be so agreeable. We have signs on our property stating,
"Warning, under Texas law (chapter 75A,
Civil practices and remedies code) an agritourism
entity is not liable for any injury or death of
an agritourism participant resulting from an agritourism activity"

These can be placed where people congregate, near restrooms, on gates, etc. We got ours from Texas southwestern cattle raisers association. Cheap insurance. Have a good time.

With all those big words you think anyone will understand what is meant by it?

we had big trailer portopotty, was worth it but need to be certain about access; was taller than expected and had to be left in front parking lot/lawn as opposed to in backyard

Hunting property and weddings do not mix well together. They would be better off renting a nice outdoor pavilion at a park that has restrooms. McKinney has one on the west side.

Doesn't matter if they understand the words or not, just as long as their lawyer does.

You're welcome. We also have release of liability waivers that reinforce the notion, "dont try and sue us". With large groups that's difficult to get everyone to sign. The signs take the place of the paper waiver. Never been beaten in a Texas court.

My buddy got married at his own land in May, 150 acres. Good 70 miles from Dallas. Rained all day so original location could not be accessed. It was held up front near house and barn. Had the trailer for portopotties. Music setup next to the goats. Food catered in the barn that had more facilities. Paid licensed bar tenders. Shuttle to hotel 10 miles away. Put plywood over muddy areas. People hung out and danced all night. I left about 10 pm. We had a blast.

So who has ever been sued doing this and for what?? Been to several like this. I have never heard of signing a waiver for a wedding.

^^^^Great question. It doesn't happen very often otherwise you'd hear more about it. Private property rights in Texas are sacrosanct. Still, we've had a couple of incidents, kid wrecked a 4 wheeler and was thrown off. Wifes co-worker stepped off the porch in her Dallas, "....me pumps" and broke her ankle. Chit happens. Be prepared.

It just doesn't make any sense. Half the crowd will be wasted if there is alcohol, and then crash where? If they can't walk to the hotel or if it is not nearby enough for cheap cab fare or uber, then forget about it.

Liability aside, I would not agree to something that would force my blood relatives to drink and drive.

If you are going to allow them to have the event, i would for sure push the side of bartenders taking care of any and all booze as well as suggest having them pay for some sort of security officers whose will help with the "you have had enough" discussions as well as not allowing folks to drive. There is A LOT of liability, so release waivers would be recommended just in case someone does something stupid and then tries to sue later on. Its sad, but we live in a sue happy world right now and it is better to have that sort of stuff on file rather than need it and not have anything in place. If this is also a place you/others hunt, i would ask for it to be a "no hunting" day so that there are not guns being fired, even if out in the field around guests you do not know.
