Where I hunt we have a ridiculous doe to buck ratio so I normally hunt the hardest after the first doe cycle. The first cycle the bucks don't move because there is a hot doe behind every tree but buck movement picks up with the does second cycle & third cycle if there is a 3rd.. I will see a lot more bucks then. Being retired lets me hunt as much as I want and the wife hunts with me a lot.

Exactly to the minute; 5 minutes before legal shooting time expires. The big ones move.

This year will be different for me. I get to hunt out my back door, have 2 treestands set up near feeders and will use the longbow only on our place. So I really want to wait to shoot a buck until I see what comes around during the rut. Just picked up a crossbow for my wife so she can try to join in and fill some meat tags. Headed to Montana for an elk bowhunt on the 28th of Sept. which is good, keeps me from shooting anything here right away. Also have a buddy that owes me an Axis and a couple deer at his place near Junction, should be a fun year. Let my wife shoot a couple does.

I try to hunt the rut, late Oct. - late Nov. "smarter" not necessarily "harder" if that makes sense...

I haven't taken time to read others but for me I hunt hardest ALL THE TIME. I also hunt every day I am able to hunt and from daylight to dark. If killing a big buck is important to you I always advise to hunt often, hunt long, hunt hard, and try to hunt smart. If your goal is just to get out of the city and do whatever turns you on then that is fine too but that's not why I hunt. Now if you are asking what time of the season would be best then I would quote what I believe Ray Sasser said about what Murphy Ray said and that is "give me the rut and you can have the rest".

Is sitting in a blind drinking cold beer considered hunting hard? I rarely hunt that hard, but sometimes I’ll step out of my position as deer camp cook and do it. Deer hunting has lost its appeal for me. I do agree with the post that I look around much more the last 10 minutes of daylight, Unless I ran out of beer, then I’d already be back at camp.
I walked a lot of miles behind bird dogs last year and I consider that hard hunting. I’ll say I hunt hard anytime I’m somewhere I can’t follow dogs with the mule.

I hunt pretty hard until I fill my tag or I decide that there is no really good bucks from looking at game trail cameras around the first of December.

... or I decide that there is no really good bucks from looking at game trail cameras around the first of December. I found that retrieving, looking at, and re-inserting game camera SD cards is an art wholly unto itself with multiple other lease-mates. It's a fascinating, ethical gray line between sharing with your "buddies" what you've "found", keeping the "team" up to date, and just basically using technology to further your hunting experience. What I've learned: Rule #1 - Put off pulling the trigger to as close to Christmas as your schedule allows and you can stand. Rule #2 - If they show absolutely no interest and don't give a rat's patutti about the game cameras...don't tell your lease mates chit. Hopefully, I will never be faced with this moral dilemma ever again.

I will hunt around 70 or 80 days most likely. Being retired does help, I like the first 10 days the best. But you killed the biggest buck anyone had seen on camera on our lease last year the last Saturday of season....
No doubt about the AR crap, just damn shame hunters don't have self control and knowledge

Oh! You meant deer hunting, not dear hunting. I was gonna say about 30 minutes before the bar closes.

Depends on where I am hunting. I'm hunting in East Texas now. I'm 63 just don't have it in me anymore to do South Texas or Mexico like I used to. Being East Texas, I hunt hard end of Bow season and first 2 weeks of gun season.
Thanks, Billy

Luckily I can hunt almost every morning and evening until family obligations get in the way Thanksgiving and Christmas. Our bucks are cruising opening of gun season. After 1st of December hunting gets tough. Definitely hunt food plots then. I probably hunt the hardest during the rut. You never know what will show up. Most of our bucks are busted up late in the season from fighting, so best to try and get one early.
Life is too short, as is. Don't chance it. Don't text and drive.

Yes sir I think lady luck was in my corner that day and I did feel blessed to get that buck. But there was just as much excitement the first days of the rut. I still say if you had been hunting your blind that day, you would have got him. LOL

I'm 69 and retired and hunt with my wife- who is an excellent hunter. We are MLD, so season starts early and ends late. During Oct. and Nov. we try to hunt every day, its all according to what I'm seeing and trail cameras tell me. At this time in my life, I enjoy the opportunity to go out and watch nature at it's best. Full moon or new moon deer are active. I hunt East Texas piney woods timber land, so it's a different type hunting. Last week in Oct thru Nov 15 seems to be the most active, rut goes full bore then. Also cold weather helps-especially in the 30's- they need more food to maintain body temp. We will hunt over a 100 days a season easily. As far as what's the best or part of the season, it's always when you have the opportunity to do it. Just enjoy it when you do get hunt!!! ^^^^Agreed. Deep East Texas here. The above agrees with what I have noticed over the years. Also post rut can be very good (muzzle loader season).

Last weekend of October and 1st 2 weekends of November...after that it gets pretty tough. I've also had a fair amount of success the last 2 weekends of the season.

I hunt the hardest when the freezer is empty. I'm not a guy that cares about antlers so for me the meat is most important and when the burger runs low it is time to get serious about knocking a doe or two over.
