The biggest expense for most hunters, is a lease fee. However, there are some smaller ones, that help all of us out. First, which license to buy? I always get the super combo, because it supports the TPWD, and I am sure all of my bases are covered. I also get a duck stamp, even though some years I may not duck hunt. This revenue supports the National Wildlife Refuge System, which does offer hunting/fishing opportunities. On another hunting note, I purchase a annual State Parks Pass. There are many State Parks that offer fishing, and some that allow hunting, on a limited, drawn hunt basis. I am just sharing what I do, what you do, with your money, is your choice.

A wise man told me to always spend as much on my wife as I do on hunting. That way, I'll always be able to go hunting when I want. He was right, but that adds up real quick. eek

If you spend as much on hunting as you do on a woman you must have one hell of a place to hunt. I thought it was expensive chasing women every night. I caught a permanent one 13 years ago and the bank account never has been the same.

Just messing with you Creekrunner. I know how much you like to hunt.
I get the super combo each year and haven't killed a deer in 20+ years. Now I just teach the grand kids the joy of hunting and fishing and to be a good sportsman and do everything legal. I I just buy one in case I do kill a deer or happen to go fishing and to support the TPWD. I'm friends with the Game Wardens and the last thing I want to do is give them an excuse to write me up. Our last one would have given his grandmother a ticket because he told me he would. I believed him.

I don’t think I could be friends with a man that would write his grandmother a ticket.

My bird dogs feed and upkeep cost more than my lease fee. Next is travel expenses, it’s along drive to quality quail country.

Lease fee pails in comparison to variable, recurring costs and don't get me started on all the upfront and once every 5 or so year costs.

I won't actually post numbers in case my wife is looking peep aim

I don’t even keep track anymore, and when I did I kept track very poorly.

It’s my only hobby I have left, my one real passion ( I liked to fish, kayak, surf, wakeboard but I never loved it ) and I feel pretty much every dollar spent is justified.

That said, I have always been pretty conservative in my hunting but will start letting go of a few more dollars on out of state hunts in better country and to more exotic locals and far away places.

To be fair, the wife and family aren’t neglected or doing without to make my trips happen so there isn’t guilt, which makes it easier.

My license is a disabled veteran cost is zero, we own the place we hunt, 75 miles to the gate. Box of shells for my 270 and a couple of boxes of shotgun shells. Maybe a few bags of corn, and if I shoot a processors fee. That about covers it.

Hunting after the lease expense is cheap if you just have a lease and everything setup. A license costs as much as going out to eat with the family. I don't plan to shoot a buck (ok a 150+ yes) this year so maybe spend a few hundred bucks on 2x doe processing. Corn $150. I can't add in gas and food as I might use the same if staying home and eating out, poker, doing errands etc.

I'm like txtrophy85, pretty much my only real hobby and I no longer keep track of expenses but just try to enjoy and of course keep wife happy along the way.

If I kept track of all the expenses and toys I use while hunting, I could not even justify the cost to myself......so I don't.

I'm somewhat like txtrophy85 except my wife also has hobbies that take on expense and time ... water skiing ... so that also requires my time during the late spring, summer and into fall. Thankfully she doesn't like cooler/cold water clap

and besides lease costs ... corn, travel, license, electricity to name a few ... I don't count food as I would be eating whether hunting or not.

I tried that argument recently when bear rug showed up from my Sept '17 hunt and pedestal bear mount from May '18 both with skulls. She did let me put them both in my study and actually the tanned rear hide from pedestal mount she place at base of bed.
Otherwise, I have not spend coin on taxidermy, just DYI euros.

No, I have other things I keep track of but not my fun......it takes the fun out of it.

I've always justified my hunting and fishing hobby as therapy, and an escape to get my head straight after a week long work grind.
That is priceless!

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.
